Just got a WD 500 blue, I used a cloning program to copy my laptops hard drive to it in a ext usb case. The program was having trouble coping and reported bad sectors. So I decided to abort the clone. Then I when to windows to reformat it, at this point it did not show up under “My Computer.” Next I go to Computer Management and see the it needs to be “Initialized” So I try to do that but get an error message saying “Data error (cyclic redundancy check). I google the problem and get a message board saying to go to “diskpart” inside of DOS and “clean” it. So I did that still not fixing the problem.

    Any guess…

It's always a good idea to scandisk and degrag before cloning not that it was necessarily what caused your problem. Aborting the imaging process is never a good idea.

If you're not making any headway through windows, you might just have to install the HD in the laptop and build from scratch.

Good to know. I'll install the hard drive and try to build it from scrach and see what happens. I'll post the results thanks for the help.

More googling says I should use a disk utiltily program. Does anyone know of one that can force an Initialize of a hard drive? I looked at WD web site and they don't seem to have what I need for SATA tech support.
