I have an HP Pavilion zv5000. My GF needs a laptop for college and I told her I would fix this one for her. I know it needs a new harddrive, and I have already identified that it is IDE. The problem is with the way it connect to the computer. This is what the connector looks like.

As you can see, the connector has some strange interface. Normal notebook IDE drives have just a bunch of exposed pins. How can I replace this harddrive without paying HP 250 dollars for an 80 gig harddrive?

It does have an HDD in it currently. It is a Seagate Momentus. I looked it up, and on the websties, it looks like it has the standard pins like the others instead of that connector like in the picture. I can't understand if this is an HP proprietary thing, or is something else?

You can take out that Momentus HDD, prise/remove the IDE adaptor off it gently without damaging the interface pins. That adaptor should fit any IDE HDD. It is kind of a proprietary thing.

Does it look something like this ?

It looks exactly like that! So it does come off? I was trying to take it off, thinking it was some kind of adapter, but it wouldn't budge so I assumed it was a special drive. I will try pliers than.

    No problem.

You need to know the Code for the Adaptor and you can either buy the IDE adaptor from ebay or any HP spare parts dealer.

Any 2.5" IDE notebook drive that has the same number of pins should work for you.

Yes, you can. It'll fit any 44-pin IDE drive. You can buy another one if necessary. :p

Dont get a seagate momentus, they are maahh.
Get your girl a Samsung HM160HC drive. It is the fastest IDE harddrive ever made, and I am sure she will love you more if her system is fast than if its slow.

here is a link to my review of the drive:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=264209

It is also really cheap nowadays, ewiz has it for like $55 and lagoom has it around $58
The best bang for the buck is actually the fastest drive ;)

Just make sure you get the HC, cause the HI is SATA and you cant use that.
