Just lastnight my screen went to sleep and turned black cause i left it on for awhile. I went ahead and closed the lid. turned it on this morning and screen is still black from sleeping. I hit enter, tried hitting the windows key to get its attention to display again and does nothing. I even held down the power button and turned it completely off. then waited afew mins to turn it back on and i still get a black screen.

I tried hooking it up to my monitor to see if i Can get a display that way and nothing pops up.. I even have it hooked up to the AC to make sure its got enough power to boot up. it powers on, just no display. the caps lock button keep blinking. I dont know what that means.

what other options do I have to check this ? its an Older HP dv7

First of all, try connecting it to an external monitor or HDTV and see if anything shows up.

Try forcing it to shut down, then remove the battery for a few minutes, and then restart it.

If that doesn't work, it could be a dead GPU. It sounds like what happened to my old xps m1530 with a 8600mgt.

Caps Lock blinking is a common issue with HP's. Shut down, remove AC, remove battery, hold the power button down for 30 seconds, make sure it's AT LEAST 30 seconds, and don't let up. After 30+ seconds let go of power button then plug everything back in and power on. You will likely have to reset your BIOS clock and all BIOS settings will revert to default.

These have a common overheating issue, but since it was asleep, that hopefully isn't the case. Try refreshing it (figuratively) using the steps HTWingNut mentioned: Remove battery and AC adapter, and any devices connected; wait 30 seconds to 1 minute; plug AC adapter or battery back in, and attempt to boot it up.

If that doesn't work, you can try removing the battery and AC adapter again, and open up the case to get to the CMOS battery. If it's under warranty, this will void it. Remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, pop it back in, reassemble the unit, and try starting it again.

    Happy trails!

I tried that, and still nothing. I have an ati 5470 dedicated card set as the primary. even if that went out, I should still get a display from the integrated graphics.

Do it a few times, or remove your CMOS battery for a good several minutes. Sometimes it took me a few times to get it to "take". But removing the CMOS battery with all other power sources removed for a half hour did the trick every time.

it's the lithium battery partially covered by yellowish cellophane (???) underneath the microsoft certificate of authenticity sticker.
