In a good way... I think...?

The standard HDD prices aren't helping much either.

I was planning on getting the 512GB Kingston Vseries SSD as my second drive for games while maintaining my Vertex 2 as the OS drive. Am I insane? :D

The people on this forum aren't exactly reasonable (for the most part) when it comes to computer parts.

Use that 512gb for os and games. Put a standard hdd in for storage.

For the price of a 512GB SSD you can buy an entirely new laptop

Since you've already sold your soul to OCZ, you might want to just get a 1TB spinner combined with a 64gb Synapse Cache SSD, would be a lot cheaper and would offer almost the same amount of storage + performance.

Or a 1TB HDD and any SSD as soon as stand-alone software-based caching solutions become available. Since both Z68 and the OCZ cache drives do their caching through software, I don't anticipate it being much longer before the software becomes available on its own.

Yeah, I am liking software caching expect I kinda don't trust software solutions...but considering the price of a large capacity SSD, I might like options like this( DIY SSD/HDD Notebook Caching With NVELO's Dataplex).

I would rather not waste my money on a SSD I can't make full use of. My laptop is Sata II only. No sense in buying something that uses Sata III if I have to wipe my data in the end. The whole caching thing seems too much like a hybrid Raid0 setup and I've had problems in the past with RAID0 anyway...

I know I keep defending my position here but it's because I've gone over all those options.

Only reason I'd go with 512GB SSD is if you got a rock bottom deal or if you need the durability. Otherwise waste of money. Go with 64-128GB SSD, depending on your needs, for OS, apps, and games (mostly none) that make use of the SSD speed.

The caching thing is not RAID 0. All your data is intact on the HDD, just most common files are duplicated on the SSD. You could flip a switch in Intel software and/or BIOS, remove the SSD, and you can use the HDD as if the SSD was never there. Or just throw the hard drive in another system to access the data if needed.

Personally I prefer an independent SSD for OS and apps, then traditional spinners for games and storage.

That company who sells Dataplex is really shooting itself in the foot by not selling the software separately. I would love to have caching available on all my machines without being locked to certain Intel or OCZ hardware.

Z68 caching is also software-based, and as long as you do not cache writes (I don't), there is zero risk of data loss.

Well in that case wait as long as possible. There are always new options around the corner(assuming you don't go insane waiting ;))

Storagereview's discussion page says it has to do with support which makes sense(supporting a new piece of software made by a relatively small company can be troublesome), but I guess if more OEM/vendors catch on, they should change their minds. SSD performance with HDD capacity is very tempting...

Yes, anyone who offers a generic software driver/app that will allow you to cache to/from any small SSD then to hard drive will be popular and rich. It seems like something that wouldn't be too difficult to implement. It would just add another layer to the IO.

yes OCN does have a good market place but, the dumbest users ever in my experience. I'v really liked my stay at NBR compared to OCN sorry to say. There are still a really good bunch of sharp guys on OCN but, it has gotten so big it's hard to get decent help or answers there.

    Like a 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 for $160 shipped? :p I wouldn't have gotten it if I didn't think it was a good deal.

I still think SSDs are INmature, my dream setup wpould have 8 velociraptors or possibly maybe 8 900gb SSDs, in a raid 5 with a real intel raid card with battery.
