thats awesome, too bad its extremely expensive.
the 320gb's are around $140, and the 500gb is $280.
2x the price for 1.5x the storage.
I wonder how it compares to the 320gb 5400rpm drives.
It should only be marginally faster.

I think Hitachi is also a bit longer than the normal 2.5" HD so there might be compatibility problems with smaller laptops.

Yes, this Hitachi HDD is 1/2" (12.7mm) thick so it won't fit in many notebooks.

The Samsung is the standard 3/8" (9.5mm) thick.

Hitachi used 2 platters instead of 1 platter from Samsung. Is there any performance penalty for using 2 platters instead of 1 platter?

    What?
Both the Hitachi and the Samsung 500gb 5400rpm drives use 3 160Gb platters.

The performance between them are going to be identical.
However, the Hitachi is going to run cooler, since its larger, and will have ample room for cooling the harddrives inner microcontrollers.
I believe that overheating is going to be a problem with the 500gb samsung drive cause their is not going to be enough available space inside the drive for microcontroller cooling.

What intrigues me about the Samsung HDD is how they are succeeding now to fit 3 platters into 3/8". Why wasn't it done previously? Or maybe, when it arrives, we will find that it has been downgraded to 2 platters with 250GB per platter. Given that 2.5" HDD platter capacities jumped from 160GB to 250GB about a year back, another similar 50% jump is not inconceivable.
