That laptop is a barebone of GX640 if i'm not mistaken. Try looking around for people that have setups with that CPU. A quick search will show that the 450M, which is pretty close to yours, is supported. It's also available on ebay.

The 480m is better. I was just noting what I found equipped on a similar laptop to yours. Although the difference between the 2 is not big, just 0.25 in core speed, so I'd say buy whichever you find more convenient/cheap.

I would buy I7 620M ES (as cheap) or even (if cooling system lets you AND if you have dedicated GPU and do not have or need optimus) quad core I7 820QM.
As I said it depends. IMO there is no need to spend mone on somewhat better CPU from old platform. Only on smth really better which would prolong laptops life on about 2 years more.

I was wrong, yours is MS-1681-ID1 (not a barebone).

But you don't need any drivers, just update the motherboard's bios and it should take the new CPU. Just make sure to have a good thermal paste before you place it.

You can upgrade RAM up to 8gb (2x4gb) and replace the HDD with an SSD. That's as far as you can upgrade it, but if I suggest getting a new laptop if you want to do a major upgrade.

Edit: I agree with James D, you could easily find a cheap i7 620 on ebay.

Yes, but that doesn't mean other CPUs won't be compatible, it just means these CPU's were tested and were being sold as an upgrade by vendors/resellers. Yes, they should be 100% compatible. The CPU's slot is G1 so as long as you get a compatible CPU while making sure it won't consume more power than your current cpu, or generate more heat, you should be fine.

You are slow. He must not to write another post for 450M because he already said that he believes
AS long as you have latest bios updated (E1681IMS.10C) you should be fine with i7-620M (at least OEM but I believe ES will be very fine too).
You can buy 620M ES 2.66Ghz wih TB up to 3.33Ghz for 129 incl. shipping or slower earlier version of ES 620M 2.4Ghz for 105$. I would take for 129$ one.

That's it. Please don't ask how to update BIOS or check its version because you can use instructions from the MSI site or use CPU-z for that.

    And if i don't have money it's ok to buy a i5 450m ?

It's ok to buy the 450m.

However, it's not very cost effective to buy it. Even though upgrading from celeron to i5 is a good update, but even with this processor the laptop will not last for a long time. Getting an i7 is a better upgrade for longevity especially when the price difference between an i5 and i7 of that type is not very big.

I didn't realize the price difference between the 2 processors isn't big, but knowing that, I would push my limit a bit and get the i7. That of course if you don't plan on upgrading to a new laptop.

James - gotta be patient a bit ;)

I'm not sure you can go to an i7 quad with g1 socket. Their TDP is higher and your power adapter might not be big enough, or the cooling might not be enough. I have an i5-520m I was thinking about upgrading to an i7 820qm but I'm not sure my laptop will do that.

99% sure the i7 620m will work. The i7 quads I'm not sure because of tdp. If your notebook cooling is good enough it should.

I will write once again. After this I will delete subscription, sorry.

It is impossible to use Quad core CPU in this laptop because 1-st Gen I-Core Quad i7 CPUs do NOT have integrated video cards. While this laptop does not have dedicated one.
I checked BIOS and it has CPU microcode for OEM 620XM. And it has bunch of other microcodes. It is possible that ES one has another CPUID so it needs another microcode but most likely it doesn't... (at least 2.66Ghz one). Even if it does it still has "a bunch of others".
    So 1% contains:
    - faulty DOA CPU;
    - small chance that microcode will not fit.
    - even smaller chance that laptop has white-list.

I possibly could create a BIOS mod with updated microcodes or even add some if I find. But I never guarantee anything because BIOS update is always risky.

    Good Bye.

The 380m actualy scores higher on passmark. Check out those links from tiller and search for results there. The difference between the 380m and the 430m are very small so just get the cheapest

    1. If the i5 480m is compatible, then yes: the 430m is compatible (and the i5 is better for gaming).
    2. Only if your laptop motherboard has a PCIe expansion slot. You must find WHICH card is compatible with your BIOS, if you have said slot.
    3. For best performance - hard disk and RAM upgrades. ;)

Here is a product spec sheet. You can use this to determine compatibility of upgrade components: Product-Sheet for MSI CR620-1060XEU

i5 - no matter which generation - is better than the i3. But in this scenario, it's not a big difference.

    You can compare here: i3 350m - ARK | Intel® Core

    i5 430m - ARK | Intel® Core

Not sure for games, but just to give 'some' answer here:

See (edit- sorry, I see it has been given before):
    ARK | Compare Intel® Products

The igpu difference is very slightly biased towards the i5 (100Mhz) - but if this was my decision purchase - I would be buying the newest tech (which in this case is the i3...).

But also knowing the performance of these 3+year old Arrandale platforms with 20/20 hindsight - I would be looking for something much more current and better performing.
