Sorry...but it feels like I need to rant about this.
Merom was released almost a full month ago, and not a single laptop with the chip is currently shipping. Some were announced, others were thought to be upgraded soon, and a few are on pre-order...but no hardware has been seen outside of ES chips.
My rule of thumb: if we can't buy the product a month after launch, it is nothing but a paper launch.
Maybe its time to forget upgrading my PC (for the CPU and GPU), and instead get an XBOX 360...

you are mistaken in my opinion. Merom was not released one month ago. The thing that was released is Conroe.

It has had the end of August release date for the past 6-10 months. The only thing sooner were the desktop and server line chips.
-
From my understanding, they also announced Merom...?

Annouced, gave road map, but not released. Its had a deadline of late august for full release, and they have been shipping it to pc makers for a month or 2 now.

Good things come to those who wait. End of August is the earliest possible date the Core 2 will be available, but you'll probably be waiting longer than that - it takes time for the manufacturers to adopt it, then build and ship it to you.
-
End of August is the initial shipment date, with the processors being available in bulk at the end of September, if I'm not mistaken...

and I guess you could say they released it too. To notebook manufacturers. And you can bet your ass they've shipped tons of the things to notebook manufacturers by now, so it's not a paper launch. But then the manufacturers take a while to integrate them into their notebooks, test that everything works, come up with fancy marketing names, update their websites and so on...
It's not like with desktop hardware where anyone can go buy the thing in stores the day after it's released.
I'm officially calling Merom a paper launch...
