So I found an A10-4600m online for $45. I figured that is not a bad amount of money to spend to get higher CPU speed and 128 more shaders.

I have never ripped a laptop apart to upgrade the CPU even though I have done it countless times in desktops.

First off AMD says the A10-4600m has a 1866 mhz memory interface:
AMD Accelerated Processors for Notebook PCs

I called AMD and they said it is up the laptop manufacturer if the CPU has support for fast memory..........this sounds wrong to me as the memory controller is on-die but what do I know.

Officially this laptop only supports 1600 mhz DD3. I am running 1333 mhz 2x4GIGs right now as this laptop only came with one SoDimm and I had a 1333 mhz SoDimm lying around.

I want to order 8 gigs of 1866 pref CAS9 if I can but I don't want to waste money on ram which will not use its full potential.

Anyone know for sure if the A10-4600m will support 1866 ram?

    Thanks

What laptop do you have? For some, the CPU can be soldered to the motherboard so they can't be swapped... I have a feeling that this AMD CPU which also has an APU might be soldered to the motherboard and might not be upgradeable... As for the RAM, don't get anything more than 1600 as you'll just be wasting your money... 1866 will just downclock to 1600 if only 1600 is max supported...

Its an hp pavillion 17-e110dx. From what I have read online this particular laptop should be upgradeable. Also I read that 1600 is the max I just dont understand why it says 1866 on the website then

Happy to say yesterday my A10-4600m got here and it installed without a hitch in my laptop. :) Upgrading laptops always makes me nervous but it was simple. Also temps went down a bit since I replaced that awful stock thermal compound with some Arctic Silver 5 I had laying in a box. Nice bump in gaming performance.

I just don't understand why AMD says it supports 1866 on this page and nowhere else:
AMD Accelerated Processors for Notebook PCs

Anyway I am aware the A10-5750M supports 1866 but I didn't know if it was worth $150. I picked up the 4600m for $45 shipped and the 128 shader cores is nice. As far as I can tell the only diff between the 4600m and the 5750m is memory support and a bump in clock speed.

This laptop will support the 5750 tho so maybe later in the year I will buy some CAS9 1866 ram and the 5750 I just dont know the speed bump is worth the money.

    Thanks for the reply :)
