I'm wondering if I should get a cooling pad for my notebook

Basically, I got a laptop today, works fine, plays the games I want. The problem is, there seems to be a vent (albeit it doesn't make noise or push out hot air) underneath, right where my leg is when I use the laptop.

So I'm wondering, would a cooling pad work and secondly, assuming I'm sitting on a bed, what exactly do I place the laptop on? I've seen small tables for laptops but they're just wood and I'm confused over it. What's the point of a wooden surface + a cooling pad if it's just going to be blocking the vents?

Or is a wooden surface that much better than my lap? If so, does it matter what kind of table it is? Since I have a small footstep thing... about 3 or 4 inches in height and I could use that. But again, it looks like the vent underneath would be blocked by the wood so I have no idea.

The other thing is, the laptop, on the bottom has a sort of... plastic bumps to raise it off the ground by about 2cms so I'm guessing that even if it's it just a tiny bit off the surface of the wood where the vents are, it's still good which would mean getting a wooden laptop tray plus a cooling pad would be ideal?

    Cheers for any help.

as long as you have it on a hard flat surface, you should be fine. I say hard surface because something soft could get up and plug up the vent.

That small footstep thing will do as long as its comfortable for you. I know many people that just use a flat wood board that they rest on their laps. As long as its comfortable for you...

Now the only thing I can think of is that the stool isn't very wide; I'd say about half as wide (from front to back of the laptop) as the laptop, so around half the laptop will be just touching air, I guess.

So should that keep the laptop cool than if it's on my legs since on Just Cause 2 the thing was really hot (as in where the vent is underneath) and I'm guessing that's the processor or GPU since it needed air to get it.

what kind of laptop do you have?

ya, if the laptop is raised up and touching air, it will be much cooler
