:fujitsu: Just thought I would post this from microsoft website:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=916196

If you are installing XP Pro and get to the point you have to install SATA drivers from a floppy, this shows which ones (Floppy dirives )will work with XP setup.

I am going with the IBM part number 27L4226, also can be indentified by FRU 05K9283. There are several of these on Ebay at very reasonable prices, One guy has 7 of them for 9.99 ea ,plus shipping.

In the stores they go for a lot more...

I will wait and get the cheaper deal then install my drivers for my new hard drives.

In the meantime I may try and load them at a computer store or someone willing to let my try out a USB floppy on my XP Pro install.

If anyone has already done this workaraound for installing SATA drivers for a Fujitsu N6410, or XP pro and any notebook using a USB floppy and 7200rpm SATA drivers, please post here.

Thanks, and I hope others will find this useful!

THere is another way to install the drivers from a RIS installation location, but that seems over my head. I can deal with a floppy... duh

    Fujitsu N6410
    2 GB RAM
    T2300 Duo Core
Dual Hitachi Travelstar SATA 7200 100GB
    XP PRO
    ATI X1400
NOT WORKING YET!!! (Need to install the SATA drivers)
(Came with 2 160GB Fujitsu 4300 hd's , and did work with those and XP Media Center Edition)

    Hard drive speed is everything!!!

Incidentally, anyone thinking of buying a USB floppy drive may want to consider that at this time windows setup only recognizes 3 drives according to the link I posted above!

Mitsumi...(no part number given by microsoft)
Sony ..part number 09K9835(unable to find anywhere)
IBM/teac .. 27L4226 ...the one I am recommending to everyone.

Fujitsu say's if Setup doesn't recognize the USB drive, to try another manufacturer's drive!!!

They could have done a search and found the link shown in my post and gave that to me, but instead they didn't give any recommendations!

I think that is kind of weak. What do y'all think?

The IBM 27L4226 seems the most common. (actually mnf'd by TEAC)

Other brands may work, but who is going to spend money and hassle buying something that may not even be guaranteed to work?

Not me...so I really hope people take note of this if they are loading SATA drivers from a USB floppy. It is pretty much guaranteed to be supported by Microsoft for the 3 listed in their article.

And anything else is guaranteed to be a big hassle if you ask me!!!

By the way, there are other floppy's listed (by M'SOFT)made by HP, SONY, Y-E data, NEC, and SMSC, which will not work!!!

(They show the Plug and play ID #'s but no part numbers)

Sorry Microsoft but I have a hard time finding USB drive's by the Plug and Play ID #!~

Anyway, at least they appear to be working on the problem, but I can't figure out how to load the drivers, and as far as I know no one else can either. (Unless they use a RIS installation location... whatever that is)

I figure that someone knows a little more about this stuff that I do, but so far I'm not getting much help on my specific problem.

The DVD with the driver's won't load into window's setup, it only works from a floppy drive. A lot of people are pretty upset about that! Just do a search on this issue and you'll see what I am talking about.

Floppy's must die... something like that!

    http://www.thatcomputerguy.us/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t14263.html

Her I have found a cool discussion, which confirms that I am correct on this issue!!!

You CANNOT INSTALL SATA DRIVERS FROM A CD OR DVD DISK DURING WINDOWS SETUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU STILL HAVE TO USE A FLOPPY!!!!!

YOU STILL HAVE TO USE A FLOPPY!!!!!
YOU STILL HAVE TO USE A FLOPPY!!!!!
YOU STILL HAVE TO USE A FLOPPY!!!!!
YOU STILL HAVE TO USE A FLOPPY!!!!!
YOU STILL HAVE TO USE A FLOPPY!!!!!

    Any questions?

I enjoy this stuff, hope people have enjoyed my comments, and posts...

Update: (Now that I have settled down a little!) :D

I am ordering a USB floppy on ebay and then will install my drivers and post if anyone is following along.

It may be a few days, so I was a little upset about the time delay, but other than that I think using the floppy install is the easiest way to go.

This is a pretty good place to just read and get ideas, information, etc; so I hope that someone out there will benefit from my frustrations in the future.

In my own case I have benefitted from post's by NoahsARk and taattta the most...from Fujitsu forum. (see forum for exact spellings) They both seem to be knowledgable about replacing your harddives in a Fujitsu. (model 6210 though not the 6410)

Basically, unscrew the cover... unscrew the 2 outside hold down screws... gently pull out the SATA connectors...(this was pretty easy) unscrew the drives and put the new one in, and then reinstall.

    That was it!

As for loading my drivers see my post on that in this same forum...

I am logging out (hopefully) for a few days so best of luck in your upgrades and all that!!!

    SUCESSFUL INSTALL!!

After a lot of calls to Fujitsu and reading various forums I finally got the new Hitachi's to work!

You have to use an external floppy and put the drivers on thier in a root directory, not from a folder. And the instructions Fujitsu gave me were incorrect!

The 3rd driver on their liest worked for mr I believe it was Intel(r)82801GBM SATA AHCI. NOT the recommended "FBM SATA..." it won't work for Hitachi drives.

Hope this helps anyone, and post if you are having troubles.

It works now I have XP PRO fully loaded and all the drviers of the DVD that came with my computer.

Best of luck and this forum gave me a lot of useful info along the way. Highly recommended!!!

SATA drivers CAN be installed without a floppy and without hitting "F6" during the text mode portion of setup.

How'd you like to create an XP cd that has all the latest hotfixes/security updates SLIPSTREAMED? Check...
How'd you like to create an XP cd that has Media Player 10 SLIPSTREAMED? Check...
How about an XP cd with Direct x 9.0c SLIPSTREAMED? Check...
Oh, but wait a minute, you'd also like to have all your drivers installed at the same time? No problemo.

Want to install XP, get to the desktop and darned near everything is working? How about hitting Windows Update and there's nothing to download? Easy stuff.

I have just completed the install of XP Pro on my Fujitsu N6410. I love this laptop but it came with XP Media Center which gave me issues for the audio recording and mixing I was using it for. Anyway, I thought that it would be simple to install XP Pro on this computer only to discover that there are obvious challenges which is often the case with a Pc and MS. So after calling Fujitsu 3 times and doing so investigating on the internet I figured out what had to be done. I found an IBM/Teac 27L4226 on eBay and was able to get this unit which should arrive in a few days. However, because I am not very patient I went to my local Best Buy and they had a USB external floppy drive on the shelf. It is a Dynex model DX-EF101. The computer recognized the drive upon CD boot and F6 loaded the appropriate driver for the SATA drive. ItÂ’s a good day at the office when something exceeds your expectations. :)

Next time, get nLite and build your own installation CD with all the drivers and patches merged in. It works. I've used it to install W2K on a desktop with SATA HDD and nLite is surprisingly easy to use.
