I'm getting an old alienware m3200 laptop...
I want to put an SSD in it, but it's an IDE based laptop.
Does anyone make/made a cheap IDE SSD? I only need <50gb...
Are there any reliable IDE-SATA converters that would work better than just a fast IDE drive?

Something like this?
I don't see any point of an IDE SSD though. Today's mechanical drives will saturate the bandwidth of that interconnect protocol. -
The shock resistance/heat/power draw are minor factors...
The random read/write is the big one. -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
A headache in the making?
I'm getting means you don't have it yet but it's already in your signature?
Why invest in a notebook from 2006 even if you're getting it free.
Even FREE,it may just be better in the long run to say no thanks now before it becomes a money eater
Tomorrow the motherboard, graphics card or screen could go bellyup and you're left with an IDE SSD that's not in demand on the 2nd had market. -
I have sigs turned off, I forgot that I had it listed...
I actually have 2, I was going to custom paint one but lost interest and decided that buying another one was less hassle than putting it back together.
I needed something small, portable, cheap that looks good. It needs to run firefox and pandora...
I've always had good luck with older laptops. It could die any day, but it's made it 7 years so far. -
Define "cheap"...
Cheap PATA SSDs are usually garbage, always have been. My personal choice - if I decided to buy a PATA SSD in the first place - would be OWC which is far from inexpensive.
While I fully understand that you're working on an AW, you might find this thread interesting:
forum.thinkpads.com • GUIDE: Make your T4x *FAST* by replacing the HDD with a SSD!
Forget anything written about T43/p and read all about T42/p and older models. A decent amount of info is on converters and such included in the linked threads.
Good luck.
