I got another T41, which came with default 40GB hard drive  . Thus I'm after a replacement IDE drive.

HM160HC seems a safe choice, and so far worked pretty well in my thinkpad T43p, but its storage too small for my uses. What I'm asking is if there are going to be refresh to the IDE version of M80 (HM160HC) any time soon?

I understand IDE is not mainstream for laptop nowadays, but it would be great to have a 320GB IDE with dual 160GB platters. If not I'll be off ordering another Samsung HM160HC, afterall, that drive is not really new anymore.

I don't think manufacturers will release new IDE drives. The largest IDE drives available are 250Gb, you won't find 320Gb for IDE.

The biggest I can find is 250GB from WD, which is less power friendly than HM160HC, not to mention much more expensive relatively, and harder to buy from my location.

You can forget new IDE/PATA harddrives, there hasn't been any relealsed for a while.

Be sure that the laptop can take the higher capacity if you find any big drives!

SATA is already replacing IDE. I recall K-Tron saying something about Hitachi drives being faster and better. Might want to check Hitachi as well. There is a 500GB model. The 5K500 I think.

    EDIT: Might not fit though...

Umm, you can't just pop a SATA harddrive in a IDE/PATA slot you know?

And hitachi does not have the fastest 500GB model, rather the slowest ;)

    Yes, but no.
    It's not 2.5" PATA

SATA is also IDE interface (integrated drive electronics) as much as PATA is, IDE is what you usualy call those old hard drives but it's named PATA.

I could find an ultrabay and put in a 500GB SATA drive through SATA>IDE bridge, but that means I can't use the CD drive, and that battery would... suffer alot, which is not good.

Yes that option is one way to go, but do you really need that CD_drive? Or battery?

I was talking about Hitachi's IDE drives. Then again, I've only bought one IDE drive for an enclosure. K-Tron's definitely gone through more WD/Seagate/Hitachi drives, so he'll know more than me :)

Not using CD drive as such, but battery is really important.

Well, do you mean SATA IDE? Because it seems so :)

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/03/hitachis-5k500-e5k500-hit-the-mythical-500gb-mark-for-laptops/
It's SATA, and SATA is also IDE besides PATA, so you're confusing it here!

Btw, those hitachi 5k500 are 12.5mm thick so they can't be used for every laptop anyhow. They really suck, as there is 9.5mm thick 500GB sata ide drives which is better to recommend!

Wow, there's a lot about hard drives that I don't know yet (true, really). I'm guessing the older PATA IDE drives I suppose. Just so you know, I call older drive connections as IDE, and newer SATA drive connections as SATA. ;)

I'm not so keen on 250GB one, as the cheapest is nearly twice the cost of 160gb samsung here; which is almost the price of a 500GB SATA IDE drive(newer connection).

Hehe, well the largest 2.5" PATA/IDE hard drive i could find is the WD3200BEVE which is 320GB.

What about the WD3200BEVE? It should be enough for you, maybe? It's twice the price of hitachis 160GB, but then you get twice the storage too.

As i said in my post previously in this thread, IDE is Integrated Drive Electronics, which is used in both SATA and PATA! So "IDE" won't tell you if it's one or the other really as both are IDE. But in 90% of the cases when it says IDE someone reffers to the old standard IDE/PATA interface.

However i see that you've checked out:
    WD3200BEVT which is SATA
    I told you about:
    WD3200BEVE which is PATA :)

Cheers, I'll see if I can get that then. :D

BTW, are there any review of that drive's performance? I'm looking, but there is no results so far. :(

The largest PATA drive in the WD Blue Series is the WD2500BEVE (250GiG)....

If going for a PATA mobile drive, go for one of the Samsung HM160HC series, unless you've had bad experience with Samsung in the past.

Oh well, there is a new drive on the block - the WD3200BEVE. Performance should be good (similar to the HM160HC and the WD3200BEVT). But it'll be insanely expensive considering that its the largest PATA drive available now (£90 in the UK ).

Hehe, phew, i was just wondering if i found a fake PATA 2.5" :D

Oh well, it's twice the money of hm160hc, but it has twice the storage though :) But it's still expensive compared to SATA 2.5" :) it's $130 here in sweden (1000 SEK)

Though performance-wise, this ought to be not slower than the Samsung?

as there are same amount of cache shared between two platters?

Hmm, I wonder if Samsung is going to release a HM320HC to compete with the WD3200BEVE.
This may mean some modifications to my IDE Harddrive thread.
Performance wise they should be very similar. The WD3200BEVE is based on two 160gb platters while the HM160HC is based on one 160gb platter.
The samsung should be a bit faster due to lower access times, but it will definitely be more power efficient. If the WD3200BEVE is anything like the WD2500BEVE it will be a power sucker.
