If I buy a "new in factory sealed box" laptop off CL or eBay, and maybe it's an older model that was probably sold back in 2007 or 2008, how does the warranty work? Would I get a full one year (assuming it originally came with one year) from the time I register it or something?
I'm guessing the warranty starts when the laptop was originally sold for obvious reasons. Thanks for any help on this.

If its a dell it will be from the date that the laptop shipped their warehouse. So if the seller didnt get around to selling it till later, then your screwed out of that warranty.
I think you would also be screwed out of say a different brand laptop if it was bought from a store like best buy etc and the original receipt was not in possession by you because again, it would probably be the date then that the store got the laptop shipped to them. Which could have been a real long time ago. -
Thanks nizzy. I'm trying to avoid non-warranteed used laptops (I have stories!) and will take your advice to heart. Much appreciated.

Good luck with whatever you buy!

Thanks- I need it. The last one had just about every part replaced with inferior crap that I neglected to check pre-purchase. Smooth move.

just my .02 here, but warranties can sometimes be a headache. Being an ex Geek Squad CIA, I had to deal with these all the time. Sometimes they work great, and sometimes they don't. Ya just have to read the fine print and make sure that you get things explained to ya. However, from personal experience, I've dealt with a warranty through Dell, and it worked great, and then another time with a Sony Vaio that I purchased from uBid a long time ago. The 3rd party warranty process went smooth when the motherboard went out in it. They shipped me the box, I shipped it back, and got it fixed without any issues.
When it comes to buying off eBay or off the net, ask if it comes with the receipt and/or proof of a warranty or extended warranty. -
Good advice, Gruven98, thanks. I've come across several people who say "Oh yeah don't worry it's covered" and then when I press them for details the story changes to "Well I don't have the receipt because my friend gave this to me but he said that the warranty was transferable..." You know how it goes.
Idiotic warranty question
