Hi guys, what temperatures of CPU, GPU is fine for idle laptops?
Laptop model is Gigabyte p57x v6.
1070 runs at 54 degrees while browsing 10 chrome tabs @ 2100 rpm fan speed.
i7 6700HQ runs at 61 degrees while browsing 10 chrome tabs @ 2100 rpm fan speed.
I have a setting to max out my fan speed(4800 rpm), when I do this, in 1-2 minutes the temperatures fall to 39-42 degrees for both cpu, gpu
The movement I switch back to lower fan speed temperatures raise to 50+
I live in India, the ambient temperature is 30 degrees.
BTW whats the highest allowable temperature 1070 & i7 go while gaming?

Generally, try to keep temps under 90*C. That's where I'd say the line of safe gets drawn. If your system is going over 90 to something like 94-95 then that's not great.

In Nvidia Control Panel set 3D Global setting Power Management Mode to "Adaptive" instead of "Performance" or "High Performance".
Those idle temps are high, but so is your ambient temps
Try elevating the rear of the laptop an inch higher than the front, to encourage convective cooling - forcing heat to rise front to back and out exhaust and across the surfaces front to back. -
As said befor, I have a setting to max out my fan speed(4800 rpm), when I do this, in 1-2 minutes the temperatures fall to 39-42 degrees for both cpu, gpu.
So can I always run my laptop with max fan speed(i dont mind the sound)? Does this effect anything negatively?Last edited: Jan 23, 2017hmscott likes this. -
The temps in a laptop can get high and still have a long life. Idling where you were and getting up to high 80's is still ok.
Given the logic that cooler is better, off is best
But, the laptop is there to use, and the more you hobble it the less you are getting what you paid for - full performance.
Setting the CPU to 70% Max disables Turbo, so your CPU only runs as high as base speed like 2.3-2.7ghz or something(?), which is far too much performance lopped off the top.
Really, you can run at Min/Max 0%/100%, and the laptop will run and draw performance - up to near full performance when it needs it, but idle near 0% when it doesn't.
I wouldn't move to iGPU only unless you are on battery, run dGPU only the rest of the time - the most expensive component in the laptop you bought - you want to use it.
So, keep experimenting, but even if you ran at High Performance CPU + High Performance dgpu all the time, it will survive - running with higher fan noise which you don't mindLast edited: Jan 25, 2017 -

Personally I wouldn't be too worried about idle temperatures around 50C provided there are no hot spots on the outside of the computer. Thermal cycling can be more damaging than moderately high temperatures. It was this cycling that caused problems with generation of Nvidia GPUs.

The main worry for me is during gaming.. Temps should ideally be less than 90C, I would prefer 80C...

Thank you all for the advices.
As of now I am using the fans at 4800rpm and it is keeping the temperature between 60-72

You can lower fan speeds if you want - 72*C is very low for a laptop
