Hey everyone, just a quick question:

I'm planning to buy a Vostro 1500 now, and was wondering.. If I was to upgrade from 120GB 5400RPM hard drive to a 120GB 7200RPM hard drive, would it reduce my laptop's life or something.. Because I've heard it overheats or something of that sort?

    Thanks!

No it's not gonna reduce the lifespan of the laptop.

It might reduce the lifespan of the actual hard drive, since it will run hotter than the 5400, but by no means will that affect the rest of the machine.

No it will not damage your notebook. I been using the drives since the first Hitachi was released. I've never had a heat issue.

It'll also reduce your battery life as a 7200RPM drive will certainly consume more power than a 5400RPM drive.

Your battery life will be slightly reduced, but it's not significant.

The technology put into HDDs lately, especially 7200RPM models, has focussed on efficiency.

I chose the 5400RPM anyway because the difference isn't extreme unless you are constantly opening and closing files/programs instead of working on a few files for a long period of time.

If you're upgrading and have the money, choose the 7200, though.

That has not been my experience. The difference is marginal if any.

my 160GB 7200rpm does not run appreciably hotter than my 120GB 5400rpm drive did...

I don't notice any heat difference between 5400.3 Seagate and 7K200 Hitachi.

7200 RPM drives do not consume any appreciable amount more electricity than their 5400 RPM counterparts.

Reasonable temperatures do not kill hard drives. Researched fact.
