If I wanted to lower the temperatures on my CPU/GPU, can I use AS5 or alternatives?

Hey all. I was hoping to get some quick advice on how to lower my CPU/GPU temperatures. I have cleaned all the dust out of my machine and tried everything else. Is it possible that the thermal paste applied on the machine around one and a half years ago is no longer as efficient?

If so, what should I apply...how should I do it...and what would you guys recommend.

    Thanks :)

It is possible that the thermal compound has gotten less effective, yes. AS5 is an excellent thermal cooling compound but there are other kinds out there. Some of the diamond thermal compounds mentioned here are particularly interesting:

See our cooling guide for application details.

Whatever the case a new application of arctic silver does not do much. The only way to really cool your notebook down is to use a program which controls your fan speed.

If you have a clevo portanote chassis, then Fn+F2 will force fan to high speed.
If you have a Dell then download I8KFanGui.
I dont know of any other fan control programs. The fan control is your best bet to drop cpu and gpu temps.

Can it be applied to the GPU as well?

It can be applied to the gpu, but it does not always work well. Most gpu heatsinks cover the memory and the core gpu. Because chips are manufactured by different manufacturers, all of the chips are not the same height. Graphics manufacturers fix this by using thermal tapes. Each thermal tape has different height, so dont go removing all of the tapes and just install arctic silver, because many of the chips would not touch the heatsink.
