What are possible causes? I found a rather cheap notebook that supposedly doesn't charge, and the AC adapter is described as smelling like burned plastic. Of course, this sounds like an AC adapter problem, but there is no guarantee the laptop will work and I don't want to throw away my money, so I am looking into other possible problems causing the laptop no to charge and if they can be fixed.

    1. AC adapter died and doesn't work. Easy fix, buy another.

    2. AC adapter died and damaged notebook? Is this possible? I know desktop PSUs can take the PC with them when they die.

    3. Damaged solder joint for plug thing? Not sure how probable this is or how this would cause the AC adapter to smell.

I guess if if only the board is damaged I can always sell off the parts, but in my experiences with desktop PCs, a damaged board or PSU could mean anything else could be damaged.

Not charging the batt vs does not working when plugged in mean different things. An old batt not taking a charge is normal. Which is happening if you know?
