I have read about how important a 7200rpm hdd is for laptop gaming, but it seems to be very expensive to upgrade, is it really worth it to spend the extra 100 or so dollars for a faster hdd?

The only thing it effects is the loading time.

YES MUCH BETTER.
($100 is a little steep though!)

You cant really tell the laoding time difference between a high density 5400rpm drive and a stanndard 100gb 7200rpm drive. You will notice much faster loads when you have two 7200rpm drives in raid. SInce most laptops dont have the support of raid, go with a high density 5400rpm harddrive, which has 160gb or more.
I believe the 250 and 300gb 5400rpm drives outcompete the older 7k100 series 60 and 80 gb harddrives.

what is a high density drive?
-
high density drive means that the data gbits per square inch is very high. High density drives i believe start at the 160gb 5400rpm drive.
This means that per square inch of harddrive platter, the amount of data is very high. The higher the data which can be fit in a square inch, the less the harddrive heads have to travel, thus increasing the speed of the drive.
