This isn't another "what's the difference" or "what's better" thread, it's a poll to find out what people here prefer -- matte or glossy. I personally prefer matte because I'm browsing the web or writing something much more often than watching movies or looking at pictures.
The only thing I dislike with matte is that if I'm sitting near a window and the sun is shining in, the matte screen is almost impossible to see.
-
Also prefer matte. Glossies look great, but I find for extended use matte is better for me.

I have both glossy and matte screens. My NEC1770GX desktop monitor is glossy - I love the colors, brightness, and contrast. Really makes games enjoyable, I have no problems viewing it for extended periods.
My laptop has a WSXGA+ matte. While it is comfortable on the eyes, it is not nearly as clear as a glossy, nor does it have the sharpness/contrast.
I used to like glossy screens, but couldn't use them for extended periods - that was on my previous HP notebook. However, this is a different display, makes all the difference. Now, it's glossy all the way.

I like my matte screen. I like the glossy ones too, but I just can't stand seeing the reflections on some of them. If it were to say high quality I would go for glossy....but matte is my vote for now.
-
Since I own a matte Laptop , guess I'llhave to vote for it
but as Chaz eluded to the quality of the LCD has come a long way and my next purchase may be glossy ......I like'em both .
I have a NEC matte and an Acer glossy for the desktop - I prefer the Acer (it is also a DVI connection which does make a difference as well) -
I have a glossy and love it. Never will get a matte screen....
-
The more glare screens I see, the more I appreciate matte. I want to see what's on the display, not what's on my t-shirt.
-
My desktop screen is a Dell 2005FPW and my wife's laptop is an HP zv6000 glossy screen. I am torn between both. To me I would think it is more dependant on the quality of the screen. Today I saw a new Sony FE at Best Buy and I think that was the best screen I have ever seen. It was glossy but had this purple tint to it so it appeared to cut down on the glare from the lights overhead. It was odd because there was a HP beside it and the only thing I saw was these big honking lights reflecting. The Sony made it sutble so if this is what the future holds than I am a glossy man.

It doesn't matter as much as the actual panel used. And people pay no attention to that. Try viewing a DVD on a glossy TN panel and on a matte IPS panel. And while you're at it, try viewing it from various angles. Then tell me which one is more "vivid" and offers "better contrast".
-
glossy only works in all conditions when you have substancial amount of light in the screen, prefer glossy but cannot live with one

Metamorphical Good computer user
I perfer glossy. But have never actually owned one. =P Both my last screen and this one (obviously since the model only comes one way) are matte. I might be better off with the matte and not even realize it because I am prone to eyestrain and migraine. Since owning my current laptop I haven't had a single headache of any kind do to long hours of use. I find this kind of amusing if not amazing. I can't help but wonder if the higher resolution helps to. Because my Toshiba, which didn't have the pretty modern tru-brite was matte as well and I would get migraines with it. The same with many desktop moniters.

I was kinda scared I would develope eye strain, but after 7 hours of WoW and an Anime-marathon(Honey&Clover+FMA Ep26+FMA movie for those who understand
) that lasted 17~ hours, and my eyes didn't hurt at all (besides needing sleep) - I'm concluding the screen is all right for long term usage

I like the brightness of glossy BrightView screen, but I do not want all that glare.
Hope, Manufacturer will soon make BrightView screens that are Matte instead of glossy.
Glare on these brightView screens really bother me while working in my bright office. -
I do not think 600M has a Super IPS, but how do we even know if the notebook we are going to buy will come with Super IPS panel.
BTW, I have 32" LCD TV with Super IPS panel, and compared to many TN, MVA, PVA panels except nasty Voilet tint in the black area when viewed from sides, it is very good. But when photos and videos are watched, still they look verygood on Glossy BrightView screen. -
I'll never go back to matte.
Glossy is so beautifull, the colors the contrast everything.
I work a lot with photo's and on a glossy screen they look at there best. -
-
I've been using Dell lappies with matte screens for a few years with my previous employer, so I was quite accustomed to matte screens. But having only used my Compaq V2000z for a couple of days, I must say that the glossy Brightview is very impressive. The colors and contrast are so much better IMO....
-
I like the matte screens. The office I work in has really poor lighting and the glossy screends I've looked at really bothered me. I suppose if I were to just use my laptop at home then the better colors would be worth it, but for now I'm sticking with the matte.
-
I'm going to say glossy... for now. I previously had a Compaq wit a matte screen that was really nice. Now I have a Gateway with glossy. I can see the advantages for both. I think that there are still a few tech. advancements to go on the glossy and then it will be gloss all the way.
-
matte is better for me
-
I'm into Matte screens because they just work for me. No compromise at all, depending on the make and model, they are bright, vivid, terrific contrast, excellent viewing angles, and have no backlight reflection issues.
It's distracting for me to watch a dvd on my television with the lamp on next to the sofa because of the reflection. I'm definitely not going there with a notebook (I seldom watch tv, I'm always working/using/playing with my notebook... school, work, irc) -
When I'm walking through my University's computer building, I see people sitting at tables using Glossy screens and I'm aboslutley amazed. The colors are more vivid and the viewing angles are perfect.
I'd like to get a Glossy screen, but price vs power is my primary concern and so I am ordering an Asus z81sp this weekend, which means that i'll be stuck with another matte screen -
glossy all the way. I didnt like the earlier onesi saw at bestbuy but my dad got himself a toshiba about a month ago and it looks fantastic. Im big into movies and games so it seems better for me. Also since i go to debate trips on a bus i use my laptop. The matte screen was impossable to see during the day, the glossy ones though have no problem.

Well matte is easier on the eyes tend to take a break from computing every 1-2hrs so my eyes are fine. Definetly better for just about anything from games to.. anything!
-
Glossy,Ultrabrite
-
Yeah, right
-----------------------------------------------------
The only problem with glossies is that u get glare at certain angles in certain lighting conditions. Whenever I try to use my gateway (matte) in sunlit areas, it gets extremely hard to see. I owned a ms 1029 for two weeks (b4 getting a refund because the idiots at ibuypower sent me a comp with multiple defects) and I must say that the screen was alot easier on my eyes than the matte on my gateway.
But hey, mayb that's just my preference -
No, it's probably that in my mind to define something as "perfect" it really must be "perfect", not just "perfect for me because I don't need more than that". But I understand where another definition can be used.
-
My only notebook experience was with an Acer matte that just was fuzzy and dull compared to the Compaq brightscreen I exchanged it for.
-
I thought I would want a glossy screen, but after looking at them in the stores, I changed my mind. In my opinion, I prefer Matte. I like the glossy, but if I want to see myself, I look in a mirror, Not in my computer display. It is very annoying to see yourself reflect in the display.

I have a CD/MP3 player by Panasonic with a metal plate in the center that functions as a perfect small mirror. I guess if I was a girl, I could use it for makeup.
-
Gloss screens are the only lcd screens that will come close to our 2 reference design CRT monitors that we currently use which are the Mits DiamondPro and Viewsonic Graphic Series CRTs.
The gloss screen of my G2 is absolutely stunning and everytime i bring it to the photo studio i do work at everyone else is just amazed. Gloss screens all the way and nothing else for my pro work. ... but not all glossies are alike so ill continue to be picky about them. -
I think it's a great shame that quality matte screens are vanishing..even matte in business class machines appears to be shrinking.
-
I've had both, and don't have a problem with either one. Never noticed reflections on X-Brites I've had, and movies look good to me on matte.
Chose matte in the poll, because that's my current notebook, and will be my next, but not a strong preference. No strong preference for wide vs standard ratio either, go figure. -
Has the technology of matte change at all? I've seen some really bad matte screens in the past - dim, washed out colors, etc. I bought a Samsung LCD desktop monitor a few months back and I've been very impressed with it and only now that I'm shopping with for a new laptop have I realized its a matte.
You probably can't compare laptop LCDs with desktops, if I could find a laptop matte this good I'd buy it. -
I prefer Glossy by far. When I got my new Vaio, I was impressed by the excellent screen it has.
-
I'm sticking with matte for now. It was a tough choice, but I've been satisfied with the ancient matte LCDs on my current laptops and the matte on my 12-year old desktop CRT. My newer desktop is an NEC with Opti-Clear that's very bright and has great contrast; I don't know if it's considered "glossy" or not. It certainly doesn't give the reflections the glossy LCDs in the store give.
And I can't stand glare on TV screens, either. -
I'm not the biggest fan of mattes. Glossy is just stunning when you're playing high res games.
-
glossy hands down. Just looks more lively to me.

My screen is still matte - I only had one glossy notebook and that was over two years ago. I'm basically indifferent but I prefer matte screens - easier on the eyes (that's a personal preference), easier to clean/take care of.
-
Which is it Chaz glossy or matte? In post #3 you are in support of glossy, but in post #42 you are in support of matte.
Like Chaz I have a desktop with a glossy (Sony HS94P) and an old (Dell Inspiron 8000) notebook that has a matte screen.
In general I think I prefer the color and contrast of a glossy to the matte, but I haven't compared any of the current generation notebook screens. I suspect they have both improved. -
Glossy for me. Takes a while to adjust but I wouldn't go back.
-
what you think of the statement that matte doesnt give up as much eye fatigue and is better for long term working on the laptop than glossy screens? true?
-
i prefer matte screens evem though my current one is a gloss screen. i just dont like things behind me (or me) being reflected in the display.
-
I don't know if mine is glossy or matte; I have the HP DV6326US. I think it's glossy.

I prefer glossy screens.

I have an external monitor I use with my current laptop (specs/review here). Is this monitor glossy or matte? Or how do I find this out?
It will be useful as a basis for comparison when choosing my laptop.
In your opinion, do you prefer matte or glossy screens?
