I have an Inspiron 6400 that I got from a friend a couple years ago; they told me their previous roommates left it sitting on the couch for long periods of time (bleh!). Anyway, here's the problem:

The battery doesn't seem to charge - at all - and the laptop only works when plugged in to the charger / A/C. Even if I remove the battery, the laptop can still work. I assume this means the connectivity on the motherboard is fine, but perhaps the battery is just toast. I just wanted clarification from anyone here who has had similar experiences.

    Thank you!

I have one in the past, at the start up hit "F2" to enter bios and check your battery condition, and if you are running windows 7, then it should detect battery in bad condition, furthermore, you can use HWMonitor or Battery bar to find your battery wear level.
    Hope that help.

battery is totally dead. i had the same on an old fujitsu and it didnt have enough juice to even reach the boot screen.

you can use battery care or battery bar in my sig below to check the battery on how much % it has left.

You should also check if you're getting the "AC adapter not recognized" message in BIOS. That might point to a motherboard/charger issue rather than a bad battery.
