Hello, I upgraded an old Inspiron 1000 to a 1.8 P4M; however, I cant get it to run faster than 1.2ghz (the lower of the speedstep options). Does anyone have any idea why this is or how I can fix it? I have attached the cpuz readings from the laptop
Thanks, Jack

Well it seems that you have the power settings on max battery. That will automtically allow intel speed step to kick in, slowing the processor down when all of its clock speed isnt needed. Try setting the power settings to always on or maximum performance. This will help keep the clock speeds up.
If that does not work, download cpu rightmark. In the program you will be able to force the multiplier to 18, which would yield 18 x 100Mhz FSB = 1800Mhz.
Or you can load a program which uses 100% cpu like burnmax, orthos, prime 95 of something like that. Then you will see that the cpu will jump up to its full 1.8Ghz.

Thank you K-TRON, but it still won't budge. Using Burnmax won't make the multiplier change, and RightMark won't change it either. I had the same problem with my dv6000 where it wouldn't let me change the multiplier. Any other ideas for accomplishing this?

It seems like your Bios does not pick up the faster clock speeds.
Have you upgraded the Bios in either of your systems?
It is likely that their is a new revision for them which supports the higher clocked processors.
I would check Dell and Hp's website for bios updates.

Hi,
I've tried the same thing with a SL6VB P4 M 2.2GHz and it would only go as far as 1.2 GHz as well. This CPU has the same multiplier, core voltage, etc., but would only give 1.2GHz.
Did you find a way to make it work?

fossks, do you also own the Inspiron 1000?
It may be a known system limitation. I am guessing that the Bios cannot read more than a 1.2Ghz P4m processor.
It is really strange though, cause I thought the slowest P4m was 1.4Ghz. (meaning that the system should read at least 1.4Ghz)
Have you upgraded your bios to the latest revision?

K-TRON,
Yes I own the Inspiron 1000. I've also upgraded the HD to 120GB and RAM to 1.25GB.
I was sure with the right multiplier, Vcore, etc I'd be fine. I've got rev A08 of the BIOS. Why would Dell put a socket on the board if the CPU can't be changed? If it is supposed to stay a Cel 2.2G, then it should be soldered on like in my Gateway 6023GP. -
Hey fossks, I was unable to get it to work at 1.8. I tried a number of programs but it seems like the multiplier is locked. I have the latest bios as well, and have no idea what the problem is. Perhaps the sis 650 can't suport throttling, and the multiplier is locked... very strange though, Jack

I'd guess the SiS chipset isn't compatible with dynamic switching.
