Hello there! My parents right now have a Dell Inspiron 1150 which they bought about 3 years go. Right now, it is running XP Pro with 384MB of RAM and a 30GB 4200 RPM HD. Would it be worth it to upgrade the ram by adding a 512MB stick in, and replacing the HD with a 80 GB 5400 RPM one? The upgrades in total will sum up to about $90, from Newegg. Should I go and upgrade this for another year or two, or just leave the notebook as-is and let it die over time?

Sounds pretty worthwhile to me. You should notice a nice speed increase and this should extend the life of the laptop.

For $90 it's definitely worthwhile. I definitely got a noticeable speed boost between 4200RPM and 5400RPM on my 500m, though not as much between 512MB and 1GB of memory.

I think those upgrades will help make it last a couple more years, so if you are not ready to replace is a good choice. Only $90 and improved performance go for it.
