Has anyone else had a real problem with the speakers on the Inspiron 1420? It seems that they can't get that loud at all, and even when I'm playing my really angry Romantic Music (like Beethoven's later symphonies) a lot of the music just comes out as fuzz if its too loud. I had an e1705 before this and I feel like the speakers on that laptop were of much better quality.
Are there any good sound cards that could work into my card slot that have a headphone jack I can plug speakers into? Would that solve the problem? Or am I just screwed?

You should have a 3.5mm headphone jack built into your laptop that could output sound.
If you want surround sound, you would need to buy a new sound card. -

I know there's a headphone jack, but I remember on the Dell website there was a Sound Blaster external sound card that fit into my Express Card slot. It had both a headphone and microphone jack on it. I was wondering if anyone had any experience using something like this, or any idea which model would be easy to use and how much it cost.

I believe that it is the internal sound card.
I compared the sound cards of Dell's D630, Hp's dv2xxx(AMD cpu), and my Toshiba's A200 by hooking up external Altec Lansing 2.1 speakers with the 3.5mm integrated output.
The result was pretty much whatever you heard on your laptop, just bit better the low's on the externals. The Hp had kind of a tin can sound and that carried through to the external speakers. The Dell was even worse, it was kind of muffled or something. My Toshiba was by far the best, most clearest, and crisp.
