i just got a full hd tv today and i hooked up my laptop, it will only go up to 1366x768, my tv is FULL HD as in 1920x1080 but for some reason if i do that resolution nothing displays, and i had trouble getting 1920x1080 to even show in the list.

can the inspiron 1720 not support full hd?

An 8600M is more than capable of handling full HD, I run an external monitor on my 8400M GS over HDMI at 1920x1200. Did you try updating the drivers ? Get the latest ones directly from nvidia or laptopvideo2go. What is your TV model ? Check if 1920x1080 is supported over VGA.
