My brother just bought a new Seagate 100gb 7200rpm ATA harddrive to replace his fujitsu 5400rpm drive which came with his notebook.

The harddrive is picked up in the Bios, and then the Windows XP Install screen comes up. The drive formats, and data is loaded onto the harddrive. Once windows XP finished installing data, the system tells us that it will restart in 12 seconds. The system restarts and then the XP installer loads again.

Usually the system restarts and then the harddrive boots. We removed the cd from the drive, and then try booting the system and it says that their is no bootable device.

We cannot figure out what is wrong, we have the harddrive set on master, and the laptops boot menu is first to the cd-drive and then the harddrive.

No matter what we do, we cannot get the laptop to boot from the harddrive.

Any help/opinions will be greatly appreciated.

    K-TRON

Have you tried checking for any physical problems with the drive? like just loading and unloading data from the drive from an enclosure or something... I mean, yeah it's new, but you might just have a defective unit?
