I am trying to install Hitachi 7K60 (60GB 7200 RPM) HD.
Bios recognises it but while booting I get message primary hard drive failure.
Using same connector and same holder, I dont get any problem if I use my old Travelstar hard drive.
Any idea, what can be wrong ?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Have you installed any operating system yet?
-
No I havent installed any operating system yet, cant even access the drive.
As soon as I boot after bios, it says "primary hard disk drive not found"
-
Not 100% sure but the PC doesn't find anything on the HD and therefore says that it failed. Normally it should say missing operating system from what I can remember.
You should have the operating, driver & manual CD or cd's that came with the PC. Insert it so the operating system restore CD will boot from the CD drive and then you should have options to install the OS and possibly format the HD if needed. -
Yes I tried it in my other laptop and have decided to return it.
Its making same mechanical sound as it did in my 8200.
Thanks

Sounds like a bad drive to me. Do you have another laptop you could try it in?
I know things, things that could get me killed

To me it just sounds like it's trying to boot normally from the hard drive but since you didn't format it and install an OS on it, it's giving you the normal error like when you put in a blank Floppy disk and try booting it with the option Boot from floppy disk first. I'd leave the drive in and put your OS disk in the CD drive and check your bios settings making sure you to mark boot from CD first and then try formatting the drive and installing the OS on it.

If it were just the OS, it would say "Missing Operating System".

Thats correct, it wasnt about operating system. I always had my OP CD in when I was booting the system.
I will be getting a replacement today, hopefully I should fine now. -
Hi,
I know this is a year down the line since this thread started but hopefully somebody's still listening.
I have an inspiron 8200 and as I'm using it for multitrack music recording,
the hard disk speed is critical, so I wanted to upgrade the hard drive.
It would be best if I could put in a separate faster hard drive for the
music data. I called Dell and they told me that the second bay would
only handle a 4200rpm hard disk and that the maximum speed that is
worth installing in the main bay is 5400rpm. They have a 100GB 5400rpm
for about 225 pounds including VAT. I've seen Hitachi and IBM 7200 rpm
drives that I suspect would fit that cost less than 100 pounds.
I am interested to know if you got your 7200rpm drive to work and if you
believe that transfer speeds are better than if it had been a 5400rpm drive.
Are Dell's sales staff just trying to pull a fast one on me, or is there
actually a technical reason why it's not worth installing a faster drive?
As an engineer myself, I really find it hard to believe that the disk
controller in what is still a fairly recent machine is so slow that it wouldn't
handle faster drives.
Does anyone know for sure?

Dave
