I have a Dell 8600 notebook with an ATI mobility Radeon 9600 video card. I want to replace the card with a more recent one, like an ATI X1600. From everything I've looked at, it seems like the 9600 is as high as this machine can go. Is this true or are they ways to help the machine adapt to the newer video card?

Nope, it looks like the 9600 is the best it can have.

And most notebooks are not upgradable in the video department, with a few exceptions. Dell has their own video format which allows the video card to be modular, however, it's restricted to within its own model.

Yeah the 9600 pro turbo is the best you can get for that laptop.

I have an Inspiron 8600 but the graphics card died about a month ago so I've done some research and yeah no go.

If you do work out a way to get a better card in it can I have your 9600?
