Hey, folks. Thanks in advance for taking the time to check out my little problem, I definitely appreciate it.
So, I decided it'd be time to upgrade the existing hard drive on my Inspiron E1405 to a new, bigger one. The upgrade:
Fujitsu 80 GB (SATA) > Seagate 500 GB (SATA)
I started the process by purchasing both the hard drive and an enclosure for it. I ran Acronis' True Image Home 2009 to clone the original hard drive's contents onto the new one (via the USB enclosure).
Once everything was transferred (the transfer took some time, and afterwards, the amount of data on the new hard drive was identical to the former), I removed the old drive and inserted the new one. When I started the computer, everything was fine until the Windows XP splash screen ( http://www.simplyguides.net/images/guides/convert_fs_ntfs/6.jpg) with the progress meter appears. It slowly fades in, and as the progress meter hits the center, the Blue Screen of Death flashes for an instant, and the computer restarts. This occurs indefinitely.
I'm able to go into the BIOS and Setup, but neither has really done the trick for me. The BIOS offers me no option to modify anything meaningful regarding the hard drive, and in the setup, I ran the diagnostic tool, with all the tests on the hard drive passing just fine.
I'm guessing that if anything, it's not a hard drive issue, but rather some far back end thing with Windows on the new hard drive? Perhaps some important Windows files didn't get copied over? Maybe I'll probably need to run a Windows boot CD?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, folks!

Welcome to notebook review,
In the past, there was another member who had problems with their E1405 on upgrading the harddrive. I think the solution happened to be that it supports a maximum of 160GB. I am not 100% sure if that is right, but we can find out. I cant see how they can limit the capacity the system can see, because the E1405 does not have a 48-bit LBA limitation
Does the BIOS read the new seagate harddrive?
If it does not, the system may in fact not be able to see drives larger than 160GB
There could also be the possibility that you need to put the seagate drive into SATA 150 mode, so that your system recognizes it
If your laptop does see the harddrive, chances are the BSOD is result of a problematic cloning.
Have you tried installing windows straight to the harddrive from the windows CD?

what service pack do you have for XP? It may not be set up for 48bit LBA support.

@K-TRON - Thanks for the thorough explanation, I really appreciate it. The BIOS is still recognizing the old hard drive whenever it's listed. And given the date of the computer (2006), I wouldn't be so surprised if it maxes out at 160 GB. I'm just going to return the hard drive and the enclosure, and just snag a very portable external. I'm thinking about the Free Agent series. Not to turn this into an entirely different topic, but thoughts?
@goofball - I have Service Pack 2 -
Have you tried setting the jumper to SATA 150 mode?
If it still does not work, I guess your only option iss to return the drive and get an external for backup
The seagate freeagent is okay, but in my opinion, the Western digital My book comes with better backing up software.
