Okay, I read a few months back about processor upgrades for my Inspiron 9100. I love this laptop - big screen, but it can sure suck the battery down, and I have the big battery. Now, in a discussion about the 9100/9200s overheating with the P4 3+GHz processors, someone suggested replacing the processor with the M version.. but for the life of me, I cannot find the thread.

So, where is it, or what processor will fit my 9100?

thanks, would love to get another year or two out of this beast.

Its not possible to replace the current Pentium 4 with the Pentium M. They use different sockets, and also different chipsets. If your notebook is overheating, or is getting quite hot, then you may want to replace th thermal interface on the processor, to allow for better movement of heat from the processor die to the heatsink, and cooling system.

Also, if the notebook hasn't been cleaned, then cleaning it may be something that can increase the airflow to the heatsink. Dust and small particales can really clog the system up, and cause the processor to become hot, and/or cause the computer to become unstable.

Zero has some good advice they do use different sockets, to further his recommendation I would suggest using Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound which works wonders.

I used it back when I had a desktop P4 in my older notebook and it lowered the temps amazingly.

Cleaning out the dust on the fans and applying alittle sewing machine motor grease on the fan axle will also help.

If none of those options appeal to you it may be time for a new notebook, or just deal with the heat :(

Also you can look into getting a laptop cooler.

    hi,
if a cpu is p4 it is the same as a desktop pc cpu
if it is a p4m then it is the mobile p4
they have different architectures and are not interchangable
if you find the latest bios update it should tell you the latest cpu support,
make sure you use good quality heat transfer paste and vacume out the fan.
i think the ram will go to 2gb's
    regards

If you don't have a cooling pad, get one of those too. They help my temps out a lot.

well dang, I could have sworn I saw someone post a comment about replacing the P4 with an m class processor. Oh well... it's not overheating, far from it, just thought I'd ask... Appreciate the feedback. Off to my new server shopping :)
