    System Configuration(Dell Inspiron 1420):
    1.66 Core 2 Duo,2 GB RAM,220 GB HD,Windows Vista Home Premium

    I purchased this laptop 7 days before.As it has drive of 220 Gb ,I tried to partition it.
    For partitioning I used Disk Management program of vista.I specified 100 GB for new partition and followed incoming steps.
    In this process,some internal error message appeared and asked me to restart the system.
    When I restarted the system,"Windows is repairing the problem" message appeared.
    This internal repairing process took more than hours and asked me to restart the system again.
    After restart same thing happened with,"Windows is repairing the problem" message.
    I don't think window is capable to repair the problem.
    These are some ways that I used to fix it,but didn't work:
    1.While startup I pressed f8 and go to repair computer.
    2.Tried to install Vista.When I started installation,asked me to choose drive.Here drives I got
    Recovery 10 GB
    Unallocated 120GB
    Unallocated 100GB
    DVD 2.5 GB
    "Unallocated 100GB" means Partition has been created for 100 GB through Disk management.
    Now to install Vista it taking Recovery Drive only as others drive are disable.
    But installation didn't proceed because of insufficient space at Recovery drive.

    I'm worried about laptop not data in it.I want it back.
    Vista is very frustrating.
    Anyone has idea Please reply.

    Thanks in Advance

    u can only install vista on a partition........not on unallocated space.....for that u will have to format the existing partition to NTFS.........boot with ur vista DVD to the setup.....choose install vista and at the drive selection.......select the unallocated drive and choose drive options (advanced) options (u can see it at the bottom right corner....there u will get options to format the drive.... choose to format it......infact u can do a partition at this stage itself......i think this will solve ur problem

    if it doesnt use a windows xp cd and format and partition the hard drive.......before this step go to bios and set sata option to SATA instead of ahci.....else the xp cd will not detect hard drive (u will have to switch off fcm slot before u do this......dont worry no fcm is present in ur comp AFAIK....its just the slot (PCIex 1x)........use xp cd for partitioning only.......dont try to install xp......because the grafix drivers for nvidia geforce 8400mgs is hard to find.....

    and vista is not that much frustrating......infact i didnt like it very much when i got it.......but now i think its better than xp........i didnt mean the eye candy.....there are lots of internal changes that makes ur system peroform better......

    @kuncheesh

    Thanks for reply...

    During Vista setup I choose Advance option,after that I saw Format option which is disable.That stopped me to move further.

    I couldn't go with as I don't have xp cd..

    Is anything wrong I'm doing? or Should I follow other way?

    Please post comments....
    Thnx
