The Slim ATAPI dvd burner in my notebook died over a year ago and I've been just fine with out it. So I got curious to see what other adapters would work in an optical bay(Would love some extra USB ports).

I was pleasantly surprised to come across This since I use an external HDD quite often. Has anyone tried these? I see they call it an "OBHD" but is there a technical name for this type of adapter?

this was done more in the days when pata drives were still on the market. the cd dvd drive uses the ide connection to the motherboard.

At least i believe that is the case still. someone can definitely correct me.

so your hds are all sata now, make sure that thing takes sata drives.

pata drives arent on the market anymore

Ohh valid point. I didn't think about the HDD interface. Everything I have is Sata. I was hoping there was a special name for these types of devices so I might be able to find a cheap generic version.

Actually, variety of laptops over the past year and a half came with optical drives that use a sata interface.

One needs a caddy in order to install a second HDD in place of the optical drive, and easily switch between the two (as needed).

There is a thread about it here on this website.
