The search is down so hopefully this hasn't already been asked.

It it possible to replace a standard LCD panel with a LED back-lit panel.

Could it be as simple as replacing the Panel and inverter?

Not real worried about the connectors unless there are VERY special.

    Thanks,
    Rob

Generally, yes, it's possible. The display has to be the same size, obviously. One particular case this wouldn't work for is the Dell XPS M1330. The LED display is actually a tenth of an inch thinner than the CCFL display, so it's not so easily swappable.

Also, LED backlights do not use voltage inverters.

    Thanks for the info. Mastershroom.

Without an inverter, is it necessary to provide a specific voltage to the LED panel, or is there generally a range?

I'm looking at one of the following for my M17:

    • Brand LG Philips
    • Part Number LP171WU4 (TL)(A2)
    • Size 17"
    • Resolution WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
    • Surface Glossy
    • Aspect Ratio Widescreen
    • Description Liquid Crystal Display with TFT Active Matrix with LED backlight

    • Brand LG Philips
    • Part Number LP171WU5 (TL)(A1)
    • Size 17"
    • Resolution WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
    • Surface Glossy
    • Aspect Ratio Widescreen
    • Description Liquid Crystal Display with TFT Active Matrix with LED backlight

I think a question that would fit would be, would a laptop use the same connector for the inverter as the ones that use the LEDs

Like if dell offered two models, would the LED use the same interface...

Because if you can't figure out what the pins to the inverter does its going to be hard to power the screen

I won't have any trouble determining which goes where, for me it's more about matching power requirements.

The inverter connectors are not the same, so you would have to search for the proper cables from mainboard/inverter and inverter/LED backlight.

    Good luck.

first step would be to grab a full service manual and check out the exploded parts diagrams.
