Anyone know if I can just take out the old hard drive, stick in the new one out of the box, then have Dell Mediadirect disc autoreformat it when I designate partitions or the Windows Vista disc?

Or do I have to use an enclosure first to reformat with a preinstalled copy of windows?

I dont think media direct can do that.
You dont need an external harddrive to format your drive.
If you have a desktop with an available sata port you are good to go. Simply plug the sata cable into the notebook drive and then into your motherboard, and then plug the appropriate power cable into the drive and you can format your new drive through an exisiting computer.
