Hi everybody. If i have got an Inspiron 1520 with 2 gb of ram (1 gb x 2) do you consider that it´s not difficult to install another 1gb ram by myself?

Not that difficult if you've got the slots for it. Don't open it up if it's less than a year old though!

Depends. If both memory slots are on the bottom, then all you do is open up a small panel and just stick in the new ram. Should take u less than 30 seconds.

Otherwise, adding more ram would involve taking off the palm rests/bezels and keyboard which might be a difficult job.

Matt, care to explain the reasoning behind your statement of not opening up laptops before a year. Is there something I'm missing here?

I think if you open a notebook before it's one year anniversary it's bad luck.

Nope, in with todays technology you can have mismatched pairs size wise (1gb + 2gb) and still have dual channel.

The question is, how many RAM slots does the 1520 have?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=136699

The thread above says it's just 2 slots, so you couldn't put another 1 GB stick in, as the laptop comes with 2 GB of RAM in 1 GB sticks. Both slots would already be used.

You could, however, get your 1520 configured with 1.5 GB of RAM and then buy an additional 2 GB stick. Remove the 512 MB stick and put the 2 GB with the 1 GB to get 3 GB. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Not in mine. My 3GB is being detected as 64bit single channel with 1x1024 & 1x2048.

Why are you waiting a year?

Because if i open the notebook to install the RAM i would lose the guarantee (or not?)

You do not lose your warranty if you open it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost positive you don't.

You don't. Certain parts of the notebook (mainly hard drive and ram) are considered user upgradeable, thus ur warranty will still be good on the rest of the system.

Whoever said that you should wait a year obviously had no clue what he was talking about.
