Hi All,
I've got a Crucial M4 128GB SSD arriving tomorrow (hopefully).
I'll be installing windows 7 64bit, and was wondering whether I should be doing anything special (and in what order) to get my SSD working well.
I've read various info, but there's also a lot of conflicting advice (eg do/don't have a page file)
I wondered whether we could get a consensus on what should be done when installing an SSD? Maybe the results might be useful to others, and could be made into a 'sticky' for reference.
Cheers,
Greg

See if some of the posts on this thread helps - SSD Tweaks and Optimizations in Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums
Note, regarding lightningltd's BACKUP post to move data from an existing drive to the SSD, some people (even in forums on nbr) have used tools to move their existing drive to a new SSD. But, I think this is a preference of the end-user, as personally, I would rather start anew, eliminating all the crud and cruft a Windows System gathers over time rather than copy all that over from an existing system.
In regards to using a pagefile and virtual memory -> See Microsoft's response on "Should the pagefile be placed on SSDs" - http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2009/05/05/support-and-q-a-for-solid-state-drives-and.aspx

@jclausius
I was going to do a 'spring' clean install (as you say, it gets rid of c&c ).
I've heard windows 7 may? create a 100mb hidden partition... do we want it?
So, maybe this is just a simple install of w7 (I'll be amazed if it is -

Don't do any tweaks unless you have to.
And, with an M4, you have to.
See:

Once that single tweak is done, you should be enjoying your new SSD.
Good luck. -
EnglishCoder,
A very good idea. If one checks out the blog post from Microsoft Engineering, you can see with Win 7 they did their homework for SSDs. But my guess is that is for Win 7 on a clean install, not when moving from a platform based HDD.
The first post includes many things to check with an SSD, but as stated in the MS post, a brand new installation of Win 7 will have most things correctly configured right out of the gate.
