    Hey all,

Bought a new m.2 SSD for my laptop, and tired to install it. However, it looks like it's not long enough. Here's ( http://imgur.com/bG4qdcc) what it looks like standing - another view ( http://imgur.com/UD602Bn).

I poked around online, and found this picture( http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/wp.../12/Acer-Predator-17-G9-791-Disassembly-6.jpg), which seems to show an extender of sorts? Does anyone know of where I can get something like this?

For reference, [this is the laptop I have]( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0161CFBEU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). There's a "B" m.2 SSD port, but I'm not able to securely fasten it.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Are you sure that is a second M.2 slot?

If you use a piece of thick/stiff foam to hold it down with the cover on, is it recognized in the BIOS and in the O/S?

What does the users manual for your notebook suggest?

    Hey!

I'm fairly positive - I've asked around and that's what I've seen people doing on other forums posts. See the picture in the second post ( http://community.acer.com/t5/Predator-Diskussionen/Predator-17-2-SSD-M-2/td-p/408274) - seems accurate.

Haven't done it myself out of fear of messing things up.

EDIT: As I did that, looks like I answered my own question. See the pictures on the post by Kno63 in the above link - I can't find it in the US though. Can anyone help with that?

    Yeah, another part is needed.

Note that I would not run any M.2 drive 'bare' like that. I would be using some kind of thermal pads on and between them and a (hopefully) metal, exterior plate.

Especially when using two together so close together.

What are your use cases and workloads for this notebook? Is the storage subsystem heavily taxed? If not, you may be able to get away from using/needing thermal pads if your other components don't overheat the M.2 ssd's.

Glad you found the solution to getting two of them in there though!

Let us know how you make out. :)

Oh? Is there a product you recommend? I wouldn't have thought they would get too hot - no moving parts and all. I run my OS and games from my SSD, and the second would just be for more games. They're big these days .-.

No specific thermal pads to recommend for you (others may chime in though).

From your usage as indicated though, I would not be too worried from the heat the M.2's will generate on their own.

What the other components may contribute to getting them toasty depends on the cooling design of the notebook you have (which I'm not familiar with).

And yes, when the ssd's get hot, they get very, very slow (below the hdd's speeds from the 1990's).

Thanks! What would make them get hot?

And honestly, if it's too much of a hassle to do this, I might end up just getting a HDD caddy for my HDD and put my 2.5" SSD in the HDD slot - still trying to figure it out.

They are exposed chips (nand, processor and ram) on a tiny circuit board with potentially much higher performance than normal 2.5" SSD's. Just like the latest CPU's are harder to cool (they have much less area to apply a heat pipe to), M.2 SSD's concentrate the heat in a smaller space with no good heat conductive material/design to get that heat to the outside of the notebook, in addition to the fact that the CPU they use is being used much more fully (to extract their extra, nominal performance) too.

If you have the option to add another 2.5" SSD (in a SATA3 slot/connection), that is what I would be pursuing instead.

@Gavo you have 850 EVO SATA drive, so heat shouldn't be much of a concern. You certainly could order m.2 extender - but it's very hard to find and expensive, so, until they become mass product, I suggest getting this or similar m.2 NGFF SATA to 2.5" SATA adapter. Also, given the size of it - I'd consider returning the drive and getting a 1TB for small premium, instead.

Got the same problem. I can hardly understand why acer placed them one above other and with some step, so we had to use extender.
