Hi all,
I did search to see if this was covered, but really didn't find anything. The main HDD on my sons laptop (HP DV8135NR) died. It has 2 100GB fujitsu 4200 rpm HDD's. Through recommendations of people on this site, I ordered 2 Samsung HM160HC (160GB, 5400 rpm).
We never made recovery discs, so I realize all of the info is lost. The computer did come with a operating system dvd (windows XP media center 2005) as well as a application and driver recovery dvd.
I assume once I replace the HDD's, I should boot my computer with the operating system dvd. After that's "done it's thing", then load the application and driver recovery dvd, then go thru the update nightmare hell.
Am I correct about the way I plan to do this?
Will there be issues since the HDD's are different and use different drivers?
Am I missing something, or do any of you have some tips?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all...

If the BIOS recognizes it and the computer supports it, then all should be fine.
Just make sure when you first startup that the BIOS sees it, then if it does, just do everything you said. -

it's verified when windows finds the harddisk to install on.

Once you are did installing windows go back and change the boot order back to the way it originally was.. -
OK, so I got the new HDD's, switched them out, checked the bios (samsung showed up). I then changed the boot order (cd/dvd first).
When I started it, it shows windows set-up, then set-up is loading files (it loads a bunch of files), then it shows set-up is starting windows, then welcome to set-up (to set-up windows xp, select enter) which I did. Then it sits on "please wait..." and does nothing, just says "please wait..."
Any ideas?
OK, didn't realize that it only saw 1 of the 2 hdd. Also noticed the old hdd had a little black cap covering 2 of the pins. Pulled them off, added them to the new ones, and so far it is up to formatting the hdd-so I've got my fingers crossed.
Now the power just shuts off while it's doing it's thing.
Any ideas? Please help... -
You bought two HM160HC's correct?
If you are running a laptop which has two harddrives in it, you need to set one drive to MASTER, and the second to SLAVE. You need to do this when using PATA drives.
There is a sticker on the top of the drive. MASTER has no jumper installed
SLAVE has a jumper across the lower left pins.
Reinstall the drives and check that they are recognized by the BIOS.
Both drives should be there. If they arent, try resetting the BIOS with the load factory default setting.
When installing windows, it shouldnt give you any trouble, as you do not need any special drivers to install windows on the HM160HC.
Good Luck,

Installing new HDD, will there be issues?
