    I'm highly considering investing on a Intel 310 80GB mSATA SSD for my Lenovo Y570 i3-2310M 4GB.

It's $200 a pop for 80GB which is perfect size for my OS and applications, I'll have a 500GB for games and storage.

    Worth it or not?

PS. I plan on upgrading my CPU to the highest i3 SB when Ivy comes out, for now I'm fine with the i3-2310M.

But I think dropping for a SSD now is better cause then I won't have to re-install or migrate (not preferred) later on.

    Still only a thought,

You probably wont be able to swap the cpu.

the 310 is a great buy, since you have the best of both worlds

I don't plan on upgrading to a i3 Ivy, I'm unsure if Ivy even uses the same socket.

A good example would be say I have a i3-330M and wanted upgrade to a i3-380M or even a i5-480M, it's possible no?

In my case I have a i3-2310M SB and will wait till say something like a i3-2380M (i3-2330M/i3-2350M already out) comes out before I upgrade, I think I can upgrade the CPU to any i3 or i5 SB correct it's not like is soldered on?

I mentioned Ivy because by the time Ivy is out I'm pretty sure I can find a i3-2380M or i5-2480M OEM on eBay.

PS. I originally wanted a Y570 with i5-2410M but the model was not available in Canada and a i7-2630QM is overkill for me.

Right now it's more a question of actually finding one first. Been looking for awhile and haven't found any available.

I think I'm going to pass on the Intel 310 80GB even though there's about 10 in stock on a Canadian online retailer, $200 is just too much for me to swallow..

I'm working on a deal right now for a i5-2410M (what I originally wanted) and going to wait around for a Samsung P810 64GB.

The Mydigital SSD is $125 for the 64GB model... I got it for my Y470 and it works great. The $200 price tag on the intel kinda steered me away.

think 64gb is a bit tight. 80gb is reasonable. for me i intend to keep the msata ssd for 2 generations of laptops. i really doubt the price of ssd's will come down drastically over the next 3-4 years. they will come down. but not like a rock. plus the intel 310 is pretty much a tried and tested design, so reliability should be alright

Great point. I give a thought.

    Update:

I dropped the idea for a SSD upgrade including that in a Momentus XT. After some serious thought, dropping $200 for 80GB is not a bad idea for tremendous speed increase but I still cannot get over the fact SSD's have a timed write cycles and no resale value at all. Even in the case of the Momentus XT, once the SSD reaches it's maximum write cycle it'll just be a Momentus 7200.4 although it's not as bad as a full SSD cause you're not spending as much is the first place and a resale of the drive is still a viable option.

    Thanks all for the inputs.

I think you're over estimating the wear a bit. The Momentus XT will only write some files to the cache and it uses SLC NAND. It will takes ages before it wears out. Even MLC SSD should easily last more than 5 years as far as I know.

considering traditional hdd's usually last 3 years with no bad sectors, i do think an SSD would last longer, especially with the whole host of issues being reported about the Momentus XT, it is also a first generation product.

I ordered the Momentux XT last week just haven't picked it up yet cause I starting reading up on SSD's but now that I know the Momentus XT uses SLC NAND flash I think I'll just stick with it.

Thank you very much Phil +1 rep.
