I have a Samsung PM800 in my m6500. I want to take it out to use in another computer. So which do you guys suggest is the best choice for me? I'd be using the drive for the OS and editing large RAW files in Photoshop, LR 3 and a variety of HDR programs. I'm not much of a hardware guy, do I go for the high Seq of the 510 or the better 4K of the G3? Cost is not an issue but I do want bulletproof reliability.

    Any and all advice appreciated
    Brad

Without seeing a G3 yet, I am betting that the 510 is the better photo editing SSD.

I won't buy one or the other unless both are available to test (together) on the same system and the same images.

The much higher total writes (15/30TB) of the 510 is what is making me guess that way - and the fact that the G3 will be the 'consumer' model with a high 'snap' factor (4K R R/W's) but relatively low total writes to the nand chips.

What I want to see is two 240GB 1.8" 510 drives in RAID0 with full TRIM support in a single 2.5" enclosure - then I'll buy four of these for each system. One for the O/S, one for the various Scratch disks (PS, LR, NC2), one for work in progress folders (images) and one for finished work (the photo editing programs 'output').

I may not see an internal RAID0 version of the enterprise level 510's, but we are almost sure to see that level of performance in the generation 4 SSD's - so, not too long to wait (but, I agree with you about the reliability - that is why it must be Intel).

Keep in mind that you're limited with SATA II on your system, so you will never be capable of using the full speed of the 510 series. I doubt that the difference between the SATA II speeds from the G3 and the 510 will be huge... but of course it's difficult to say anything specific about the G3 as long as it isn't released.

I would wait for the G3 or go with Samsung 470.

This is what made me think the 510 may be the better choice

Yeah- I thought of that and agree with you. The upside is that I'll replace this laptop in the next 18 months, the SSD will move into new (SATA III) computer.
