    Nvm, I fried the USB to SATA adapter in my enclosure trying to be all cool and crap :-/ Oh well, at least the HD is in the PC now :)

    =EDIT=
    ======

    Before anyone says anything, the AOpen MZ915-M uses a laptop chipset and pentium-m CPU so what applies to a laptop applies to this unit more or less.

    I have the AOpen MZ915-M in my sig and all is well except when I try hook up my Toshiba 1tb 2.5" USB 2.0 HD it will either not recognize it and it keeps power up then down on the front 2 USB ports and in the rear it works long enough for windows to initialize it, lets it show up as TOSHIBA in "My Computer" then the HD doesn't show up anymore and the power light on the HD goes out and will not come back on for more than a second even if I unplug it or plug it into the other rear usb 2.0 port.

    I have updated the intel chipset driver to the latest on intel's site for XP but the hard drive had the same issues using the chipset drivers loaded with a retail xp pro SP3 cd.

    I tested the memory on the system with Memtest 4.00 and I tested the hard drive in the system with hdat 2 and there are no issues. I ran OCCT on the system for an hour without issues and ran furmark on the 9500GT for 30 minutes without issues.

    The HD works fine on every other PC I tried it on but sadly I do not have another 915G based system to test it on.

    Is there some sort of usb limitation on the intel 915g chipset?

    Have you tested the Toshiba drive on another computer to confirm it works?

    My guess is that the HDD is pulling too much power for AOpen board to handle, but not too much power for all your other machines to handle. Can you try it with one of those dual-power USB cables or a powered USB hub?

    Thought about that but am unable to locate a dual USB type a to mini type b cable :-/ We had a DVD burner at the shop last month that had one but we sold it and never got another one in stock.

    Whoops :( I'm blind.

    If it shows up in Windows, that means it installs the drivers. Does it disappear immediately after it shows up in My Computer? Have you tried a different brand 1 TB?

    Yes it dissapears immediatly after it is recognized and loads the drivers and no I do not have a 1tb internal or external hd to test :-/

    I'll stop by RadioShack tomorrow and see if they have a dual type a to mini type b cable tomorrow and see if that is the problem. No other usb device I've used with the machine so far pulls as much power as a hd.

    Weeeee, I fried the USB to SATA bridge trying to merge the +5v and ground on one of the USB headers ( the usb header still works when I retested it without modification ).

    On the upside, the 1tb HD in the enclosure is indeed a sata drive and works fine in the MZ915-M :) I just went ahead and installed it in the machine ( look at sig : )

    It's not a chipset limitation and had I been patient and waitied till morning I would have a usable external enclosure still, well, there goes the other 2 years of my warranty on that but hopefully in a case cooled by a fan it will last longer anyways :-/
