Hi guys. Ive actually used these forums about a gizillion times for help, but its usually a question that someone else has asked before, so now I had to register and ask something that I couldnt find the answer to :)

I have 2 notebooks, both with the intel 965 chipset. Now I know the intel 4500 really isnt any good for new games, but that is not where the problem is. One notebook is a Dell Inspiron 15 series, and the other is a HP Probook.

Ive plugged the notebooks into an LCD flatpanel television using the HDMI output, and Ive got 2 problems.

    1. Even though my notebook has the same resolution as the TV (1366 * 768), when I got to my Intel graphics settings I can only choose 1280*800 as the nearest setting on the television (but 1366 * 768 works fine on the notebook's monitor).

I am guessing Intel drivers do no support this resolution for HDMI output by default? Is there perhaps a software hack, or is it hardware controlled?

    2. There is picture but no audio. I know its not the television, because my other HDMI devices, PS3 etc. give perfect audio. Its just these 2 notebooks. Is there a fix for this, or is it also a hardware limitation?

Ive already downloaded the latest drivers for both notebooks, so no help there.

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions? Even if you could maybe point me to a usergroup with people that might know, Id be grateful. Thanks.

If your notebooks have Intel 965 chipsets, then the graphics are not GMA 4500, they are GMA X3100 instead.

    1. I don't know the answer for the questions in this number. I've seen the graphic properties on one of my notebooks which has GMA X3100, there is no 1366x768 option either. But I don't know, maybe it is because the connected monitor (Dell S2940W running @ 1920x1080) doesn't support 1366x768.
    2. Audio for HDMI is controlled separately. You have to choose and set it first as default device from the Sound on Control Panel (if you are using Vista).

Ok, sorry, you are correct. I wasnt sure what chipset I have, I just know its the one with intel 4500 mobile graphics. I thought it was the 965, but its not a 3100 so it cant be.

Anyways, that still does not explain why there is no HDMI support for my 1366*768 resolution. Its a bit ridiculous, cause a lot of TV's have that resolution, and I would think a lot of people would want to be able to plug their notebook into a TV.

Thanks for the tip on the HDMI sound, unfortunately I can only find one audio device output in control panel, but I will keep on looking, thanks for the help.

Intel Graphics= crap. NVDIA or ATI= great. I just played brothers in arms hell's highway on my HDTV that day using HDMI and i had no problems playing at any resolution but i prefered full HD resolution.... so get a new laptop with NVDIA or ATI dedicated graphics. just throw away ur current notebooks....

Looks like your notebooks are using GMA 4500MHD graphics and the chipsets are GM45.

Regarding the sound, I don't know how Intel deals with HDMI sound, but in my Studio 1735 which uses ATI graphics, there is a separate HDMI sound in Sound on Control Panel which needs to be set as default if I want to channel the sound through HDMI. Maybe HDMI sound driver is not installed? Intel website says it should have been installed automatically with the graphics driver.
