The package is how they fit into the motherboard. BGA stands for ball grid array and is soldered, PGA is pin grid array and is the typical slip in CPU with pins in the bottom to fit into a typical CPU socket. With the exception of the 620M, the rest of the 6 series will only be in the upgradeable CPU socket. This means there is a chance some 620M CPUs will not be upgradeable due to their CPUs being soldered into the motherboard.

    I'm intrigued...
Just sold the Asus G50VT, gave the HP DM3 to my sister, and the HP 6930P I purchased on ebay 3 weeks ago still hasn't arrived and seller won't respond to my emails.
So for the 8th time or so in the past 4 months... I'm in the market for another laptop

Would I'd be able to swap out a current Core 2 Duo processor and plonk one of these in without a hitch?

No, they use different sockets. C2Ds use socket P, while the i series uses µPGA-989. Not to mention the fact that without the new socket (and corresponding motherboard) there'd be no way to utilize the new integrated GPU.

The i5/i3 aren't meant to be in the same types of laptops as the i7 so the comparison isn't relevant... They're also all dual-cores with HT vice quad-cores.

Well, the naming is screwed up, again. They are going to have i7 quad core, and i7 dual core. How are they going to explain that to buyers at BestBuy...

They should have gone with Intel Mobile i7 x2 for duals and x4 for quads.
Intels new cpu names are so cryptic. xD

    Edit:
    Lol. :)

I think the worse is for consumers in the desktop market as there is a quad core i5 and then dual core i7.

They do have a Q for quad-core (or an X for the Extreme quads) in front of the M (Mobile) or a U fir ultra-low voltage, and an L for low voltage.

But yeah the desktops are worse.

Intel did a terrific job with this new platform! My next laptop will be an Arrandale based one. Intel has expanded the gap little by little over AMD all these years, especially on the mobile market, which is a shame because AMD is heading at a no return point, in which will not have a product to fight back.
