From the two or three threads I've read in Toshiba's official forum it seems that their laptops are picky and limite the choice of ram that can be installed on them.

This remainds me about something that happens to me this past weekend. I helped a friend of mine with his Dell laptop. His system was mess up and required a fresh installation of Windows. We tried Windows Vista, 7, and XP. With both Vista and 7 the installation stopped after about 5 minutes without making the computer freeze. With XP it was a BSOD. I thought he had a faulty ram. I tested the RAM with PC-check and the computer freezed half way through the test and that despite the fact that PC-check didn't show any error. When I run Dell Diagnostic tool it showed a faulty HDD.

That's to say try to check the integrety of your HDD.
