I'm considering getting an Acer 1410 for a lightweight highly portable machine.
    There are two processor options

    Intel Celeron SU2300
    Intel Celeron 743

Can anyone elaborate on any real-world performance differences with Windows-7

SU2300 will give you a lot more battery life and will be a lot more efficient

The celeron runs hot, eats watts, and is a budget-oriented chip

The su2300 is pretty much the dual core 743, so decide for yourself.

Where do you come up with this?

Forgot to mention, they are both single-core processors. If you fill out the "What Notebook Should I Buy" FAQ we can help you better :)

I posted the wrong thing so changed it to that before I went back and edited it.

But literally everything you have said about both processors is wrong other than saying the celeron is a budget chip.

Both the 743 and su2300 use the exact same chip, the revision R0 penryn/wolfdale 3MB core ubiquitous throughout the core 2 line. The only difference between them is the 743 is single core with a 6.5x multiplier and the su2300 is dual core with a 6x multiplier.

SU2300 is an ULTRA LOW VOLTAGE processor while the Celeron is NOT.

I have a notebook with the celeron and I have a 5810 with a su2700 which is a higher clocked su2300. Care to prove me wrong?

    The 743 is single-core, the SU2300 is dual-core.

Go with the SU2300. HD video will playback better, multitasking will perform better, and overall everything will be smoother.

Do you know which video codecs allow for multiple cores to be used?

The reason some may choose the 743 over the SU2300 is that for the same price point, you usually get a larger hard drive in return (160gb vs 250gb) like for the Acer 11.6" models.

However, the hard drive can always be easily upgraded, whereas the processor is next to impossible to upgrade.

For AVC, DivX H.264 Decoder, CoreAVC, ffmpeg-mt, Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder (probably multithreaded, however is brilliant at utilising the capabilities of the 4500MHD).

Go with the SU2300 as it supports VT-x and it's dual core, where the 743 doesn't support VT-x and is single core. The SU2300 also supports Enhanced SpeedStep, so you'll get more battery life out of the SU2300. The SU2300 is a very good processor, but most people dismiss it because it's a Celeron.

Sorry, thought it was a single core as the higher numbered su2700 was a single core

But it gives amazing battery life. I used to net around 7-8 hours with my 5810 with su2300

I've been searching for info about the su2300 and people have been claiming that it doesn't have speed step regardless of what intel says. That would make sense as no celerons have it. I doubt it would do anything though. The processor would be using barely any power as is. The 743 being single core should have lower consumption.

I've read about this also, but I just quoted that because that's what the Intel ARK page said. I remember it being something about not being able to lower the voltage, or the multiplier won't change... something like that.

They are BOTH celerons. And what is wrong with celerons besides their name?

According to this thread the SU2300 doesn't have speedstep. So it's 6x200=1.2Ghz all the time. Might have a negative affect on battery life over a SU4100/SU7300. The SU2300 can operate as a 743 if you disable one of it's cores in the bios or via BCD/boot.ini.

it seems that they have some form of undervolting although it doesn't have speedstep... there was thread on this long ago...

Both processors have a TDP of 10W, but the 743 is a single core and the SU2300 a dual core. Easy said: the SU2300 has the same battery life, hardware virtualization and double the power of the 743

They assign it a TDP of 10w because it is a celeron, but it undoubtedly uses much less power and runs cooler than the su2300, not that the su2300 is using lots of power, running hot, or anything like that.

The su2300 is a low voltage chip, it's been stated. The difference is neglible wattage wise, but in power wise the su2300 will come out on top

Yeah the SU2300 is basically stuck at 1.2GHz, so battery life isn't as good as a SU4100.

SU2300 a good candidate to apply BSEL overclock as PLL FSLx pins, since Celeron's don't lock to the lowest multiplier. So would go from 1.2Ghz (6x200) to 1.6Ghz(6x266).

    Passmark numbers:
    M743 1.3Ghz single core - 477 points
    SU2300 1.2ghz dual core - 923 points

For more power i´d go for SU2300, better for multitasking.

My su4100 only lowers it's multiplier to 6 from 6.5 (1.3 ghz to 1.2) at 1.2 ghz it uses .925v, at 1.3 ghz its over 1v.
