Heres a link on 2nd generation i5,i7 series and the fastest sodimm ram running with these to date.

"Kingston today announced the new HyperX Plug and Play (PnP) notebook memory module series. This series is aimed at high-performance computing enthusiasts that are looking to get the most from their second generation Intel Core i5 and i7 'Sandy Bridge' mobile processor. You see, when Intel came out with the Huron River platform (Intel HM65 Express Chipsets) the only certified JEDEC settings were 1066Mhz and 1333MHz. So, when most of these notebooks came out in Q1 2011 they were all fitted with 1333MHz memory kits. Well, the JEDEC board recently released JEDEC-compliant settings allowing for 1600MHz and 1866MHz frequency support on these platforms. The Intel 'Sandy Bridge' mobile processor family can easily support these faster memory speeds, so it was only a matter of time until memory companies came out with 1600MHz and 1866MHz modules that had the proper SPD settings to Plug and Play with these new notebooks. The first company that we know of to do this is Kingston with their famed HyperX memory series. "

A similar Comparison of AMD and VIA processors would be cool too,, :)

How does a 2 core chip have 4 threads? Does that mean 1 core can multi task and run 2 threads at the same time? C2d are 2cores but I believe they are only 2 threads.

Yes that is right Quanger 1 core can run two threads at the same time.
C2D's are indeed single cores with single threads.

Multi-threading was a way to increase performance without having to add additional cores and it does indeed benefit multitasking.

You took that from marketing review of this RAM but do you really think that 2-nd gen i-cores can support that insane 1866Mhz? I read that they don't.
Besides check the first post. I believe i7-2630 is not a first gen one

1600 mhz they can support, however 1866mhz... I am not quite sure. Maybe maybe not.

No current Intel mobile CPU/chipset can support more than 1600MHz officially. However, if it's possible to overclock the memory on your specific laptop, your modules should run at their rated speed. So if you do not overclock, putting in a 1866MHz stick will automatically downclock to 1600MHz for quad cores 2nd gen i7s or 1333MHz for the rest of the dual cores.

sgogeta, I think you're right the only way to get 1866 mhz may be to overclock.

My desktop has 18666 Ram. It works fine at 2 chips but I dropped to 16000 to keep stability up when I went to 4 (16GB).

Actually,,i7-2630M is 2nd generation,,the notebook firm misprinted there configuration wording.

2nd Generation Intel Core i7 Mobile Processor

As too 1866Mhz ram,,,it shows it running in ASUS K53E 15.6-inch notebook with DDR3-1333 and 2nd gen i5 and then upgraded the ram to HyperX 1866Mhz(shown in CPUZ) and then benchmarked several times, testing in windows 7 and 3rd party test utilities,,no mention of overclocking was ever used, just plug in and benchmark!!! Oh,,they did a drop test with the HyperX in the notebook to a couch,, :)

    Cheers
