Ok so i have been researching which CPU I am going to upgrade to but came to a problem. The CPU that I want to get it the T9550. The problem I am coming across is my socket is a 479. I see all of these T9550 CPUs that are in socket 478 and socket P. I know that the 3 sockets are identical but would the CPU work in my 479? I have also noticed that some people list them as Socket 479, and 478. Please help as i do not want to waste money on a CPU that will not work for me.

I see that they are not compatible but why do vendors list them as 479, 478 sockets?

Generally it's just bad naming. Sometimes manufacturers also use a generic physical socket that will physically accept 478/479/M/P chips even if the underlying platform will only actually only support one generation.

So it would be best to make sure that it would be socket 479

You should ignore what anyone says about the socket and make sure you get a compatible CPU. Basically nobody is going to label the socket correctly, so you can't rely on it.

What is your laptop and what is your current CPU?

Well, it looks like you have GL960, so I'm just going to quote what I said back in 2008 about GL960, which generally remains true:
