I need a laptop for work and home - internet, word, excel, powerpoint, email, watching/burning DVDs, photos, etc. - no gaming or anything. I also need a docking station for work so I've been looking at HPs.
Between the processors mentioned above, is one really a lot better than the other for my needs? The one with the Turion tends to come with more memory (320 for AMD as opposed to 250 for the Intel) and more RAM (4 GB for AMD as opposed to 3 GB for the Intel) for about the same money, but I believe I've heard the Core 2 runs cooler and more efficiently with longer battery life - is that true? Which one would better suit my needs? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Please check the number of the Intel CPU. T5550?
In general, Intel runs a little cooler and gives better battery life than AMD. If the best possible battery run time is not one of your priorities then the AMD solution can be better value for money.

the c2d will be faster than the x2 (despite the lower clock speed). The c2d has a tdp of 35W and the x2 has a tdp of 35W, so battery life should be similar, although the x2 will run quite a bit hotter. Your laptop will only be able to use 4gb of ram if you're using a 64bit OS which I expect you're not (just guessing). I'd go for the t5500, if you don't mind less hd space.

Oops, missed a number there. Yes T5550 -
Get the lowest HDD and RAM config if possible, and upgrade 'em yourself. Its easy and falls out to be cheaper.

the RAM is 3GB or 4GB and Memory is the 250GB or 320GB....turion if battery not ur priority

for the Turion, HP will ship with x64 as it has 4GB memory I would go with the Turion if I where you. (assuming battery life is not that important, and preformance wise they are both fast enough for your needs)

undervolted with RMClock the Turion X2 will be cooler

I second the Turion better value for the money
Intel Core 2 Duo t550 or AMD Turion 64x2 TL-60?
