I'm wondering what is the difference in terms of speed, heat and battery life between these 2 processors.

Also, what is the difference between AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core and AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core?

    In terms of:
Speed - If they have the same clock speed and cache then the performance will be equal.

Heat - Pretty much the same.

Battery life - Again the same.

The only difference between the current 65nm Turion X2's and the Athlon64 X2 is the L2 cache which is half of the Turions. (2X256k vs 2X512k)

AMD Turion processors are specifically designed for use in a notebook. AMD Athlon processors are intended for use on a desktop platform, and so have higher power requirements, higher heat outputs and higher clockspeeds. Intel mobile Core 2 Duo processors are generally faster than AMD Turion processors, clock for clock. However, Turion processors offer very good value for money, and their performance is still more than sufficient for everyday tasks.

wow, thanks everyone for the fast replies, i have more of an idea what I should be getting now.

    Just to confirm, can I say that a Intel Core Duo Processor(667MHz, 2MB L2 Cache) should be faster than a AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55(1.9GHz, 512KB + 512KB L2 Cache) right?

for memory starved applications get a Turion. Intel simply can't match the bandwidth that AMD's memory controller provides. I think this explains why integrated graphics on AMD laptops are generally better than Intel because they CPU can send and fetch memory better and these integrated graphics cores use shared memory.

And Core Duos are total crap. They don't do EMT64 whereas I can run Vista Ultimate 64-bit with my Turion TL-60.

I'm guessing Photoshop, Flash CS3 etc. belongs to the memory starved applications group?

Whats the clock speed of the Core duo?? Generally the Turion X2's were clock for clock competitive with them. The core 2 Duos on the other hand are faster than both.

the core duo clock speed is 1.66GHz. that is what my brother is using now for his Acer, and I think it's pretty fast. that's why I'm using that as a benchmark...

    No.

Clock for clock, the intel usually has an advantage, but not for everything. For many old style floating point calculations, the Turion X2 will shut down the Core 2 Duo. I am currently using a 2.4 GHz T7700 but for what I do, had I been able to get an otherwise equivalent notebook, the 2.3 GHz Turion X2 TL-66 would have been faster.

In the end, the other parts of the notebook determined that I would get the T61, which does not come with an option for a TL-66.
