As far as I know, any Core Duo is upgradeable. Some people have gotten hold of a Core Duo 2 and done it with a Sony and I think the other one was a Dell. But take note that Core Duo 2 isn't available yet. Those were pre-production models that got leaked out.

you should be able to (with a BIOS upgrade) with 1st-gen Merom's (Core 2 Duo). August/September time frame. don't quote me though because i could be incorrect.

Keep in mind you won't have a warranty anymore.

you need to make sure that the socket on your motherboard supports the socket of the core duo 2.

As others have said, the first generation of Core Duo 2 chips are pin compatible with current Core Duo CPUs. However whether they work or not is undetermined for the majority of laptops. Some may work just by swapping while others may need a BIOS update.

At this point its to early to tell and those who have tried have gotten a hold of Engineering Samples of the Merom chips.

I have read that while the Sony SZ series does work with the Core Duo 2, there seems to be heat related issues.

I read of a user on notebookforums.com that upgraded his Dell XPS M1210 to a Core Duo 2 with little hassle.
