The Core 2 Duo has a new architecture that makes it a better processor all around (faster FSB, better build, etc).

The t2600 is old technology. It might be slightly faster than the T5600 but the t5600 is more future-proof.

Both a based on a different architecture. There are similarities and differences. The T5600 is based on Merom, which was derived from Conroe, the desktop architecture which has been very succesful for Intel. The T2600 was based on Yonah, which is where Conroe had taken its main features, along with previous mobile cores produced by Intel. Merom performed around 10% faster than Yonah, when comparing similar clockspeeds. However, this figure reduced a bit in comparisons with T5X00 models, because there was a lack of cache, and clockspeeds were lower.

In this case, you have a very fast Core Duo processor, and it should outperform the T5600 farly easily. However, if your an average user, you won't notice the difference in speed. It only comes into play when you are completing a processor dependant task, such as video editing or encoding. 64-bit is something the Core 2 Duo has, but its pointless having at the moment. There are no 64-bit programs on the consumer market, and there won't be for quite some time.

As Zero noted, 64-bit is useless for most people right now and it will probably remain that way until Microsoft releases their next OS (whenever that may be). Vista is not going to make 64-bit mainstream; the 64-bit version of Vista has very little support from manufacturers.

Give a choice between the T2600 and the T5600, I would go with the T5600 because it is newer and more efficient.
